My partner and I stayed at the Star Hotel in January 2012. It looks fantastic in the photo on this site, really smart and glitzy, but the rooms are a disappointment, like something out of a '70s catalogue. It was overpriced for the room, the bed didn't smell very fresh and the pillows were lumpy. The worst thing was the building work next door which woke me up at 6am with banging that, in my jet lagged state, I thought was in the hotel corridor. It was actually next door where they are building their new hotel less than a meter away!
The windows don't shut out the noise of the cars and motorbikes in the street banging their horns all day and night, but I think this is probably the case in most hotels in HCMC!?
On the second night, the staff frightened me half to death when we arrived back to find a substantial parcel of food waiting for us in my name. According to the receptionist, the delivery driver knew my name and that we were travelling on a bus to another destination the next day which was correct. We never tell anyone anything about our journey so this was a bit disturbing. It turned out that someone had delivered the parcel to the wrong address.
On a positive note, the staff were very friendly, the reception smells of citronella and they opened both the huge glass doors for us everytime we entered. But we wouldn't go back. I just wish I'd taken some interior shots of the room to show you because the picture on tripadvisor doesn't truely represent this place!
