“3 star rating, may be a bit too generous?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2008

No place for the aged, they would never get up the stairs from the street. Arrived there in the evening. I think it is in the brothel district by the girls I saw. Rooms clean, had a window with a view. Staff pleasant enough. But for the price I would expect tea/coffee in the rooms and a bottle of water per person, not 500ml for two. No internet. Would not consider using it again and would not recommend.

“Value for money”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 March 2008

The Saigon star is worn and very outdated, but is in a good location, opposite Cutlure Park, and clean. I had to look twice at the pictures from reviews written in 2005. The Staff are very friendly and happy to help.

Good in-hotel prices for massage, mini bar and roof top restaurant. The Karaoke bar is on the the 1st floor, but did not effect us, on the 5th floor. Nor did the street noise. The breakfast had plenty to choose from, but the table cloths need replacing (or cleaning?) .

The service and food on the roof top restaurant are great, but you don't actually have a view of the park or street, unless you stand up and look over the railing.

Crossing the road directly outside the hotel can be an adventure, as is anywhere in Saigon. For a better chance, turn left as you exit the hotel and walk up to the lights. 90% of the traffice will obey the red light, just remember to check traffic coming from other directions. The hotel exchanges currency, but on a few ocassions ran out and we walked 2 doors up to the Chancery Hotel, to do so.

Other comments - Blunt razor blades (as we found everywhere in Vietnam hotels). Bathroom exhaust fan cover fell out, but was fixed swiftly.

“Great Service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2007

For the price, we found this hotel to be excellent value. We were on the 5th floor and had almost no street noise at night. The Palm Court Restaurant was cheap and had good food. A Friday night buffet for around $US5 a head was outstanding value. We found the response times to queries was excellent. The location had little to offer so we used taxis to nearby shopping areas. The traffic was too heavy outside to walk or cross roads. Most taxi trips were around the $US1.20 mark. We would recommend this hotel to others.

“Cold and inflexible staff.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2006

I was supposed to checked in 21 sept and stay for 5 nights, but could not get ticket from Phnom Penh ( they have 5 days break , high traffic volume)

Nevertheless , I informed them thru travel agent Directroom of Glad Enterprise on 3.14 pm , 21 sept

During the stay , I asked them for refund , they claimed that on the first day it was a "no show" from me and therefore no refund, they were very stiff and trying to avoid me and push me away by asking me to talked to the travel agent.

I asked them to charge me half for one day extension ( I intend to stay 1 more day) but alas , they were so cold and said there is no more room even though it was near empty and is tuesday night . The management need to be flexible instead of hiding behind their policy if they want to keep the customer satisfied

“Excellent service, bad air”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2006

Saigon Star is along a very busy street, but surprisingly well noise is alleviated so that traffic is only faintly heard from the hotel inside. Service level and food is excellent. One major issue that should be addressed quickly is air quality within hotel rooms. There is a definite mold problem in Saigon Star. My girlfriend developed quite nasty skin problems during the visit in Saigon Star. Also I developed breathing difficulties, which were solved by using regular anti-allergic medicine. More evidence about mold problem came when we took an excursion to Phan Thiet. During that time, our allergic reactions vanished, thanks to tile floors in our resort. But soon after re-check-in into Saigon Star, allergic problems started again. Therefore, I kindly ask hotel management to do something to this problem ASAP.
