The Asian Hotel won't appeal to all travellers. It's probably a 3 star hotel at best, things are a bit frayed around the edges and at night you can hear a disco somewhere in the vicinity.
But we liked it!
5 star hotels are the same all over the world - you could be anywhere. Staying at the Asian you know you're in Vietnam. The rooms are clean and have TV, fridge and en suite. The staff is very friendly and helpful. They serve an Asian/European buffet breakfast, and the restaurant meals are delicious. There is an internet booth in the foyer.
The best thing about the Asian Hotel is its position. You can walk easily to the Saigon River and the markets, the Reunification Palace, the War Remnants Museum, Notre Dame Cathedral and the post office. Everything else is a cheap taxi ride away.
The reception desk staff booked day trips for us, and we were never let down. Across the road is the SaigonTours office which charges $US40 per person to go to the Tay Ninh temple and the Cu Chi tunnels. Booked by hotel staff the same trip cost $US14 per person (pick up and drop off at the hotel door).
The Parkson Shopping centre is next door. It has a super-cheap supermarket and a food hall on the top floor, and ATMs on the ground floor.
On our next trip we'll stay at the Asian again.
