“lovely hotel, but........”

my husband and i stayed here for 4 nights and were very pleased with the hotel, staff are very friendly and helpful, rooms are gorgeous and huge (we booked a delux) and the hotel is very central, walking distance to the opera house, town hall and the river and about a 15 min walk to ben than market, be aware though we stayed in HCMC during the lunar new year which was great the celebrations were amazing, but about 90% of shops and attractions close for the new year and not just for 1 or 2 days but for 4/5 days, my husband and i walked the ben than market 3 days after the new year and only about 10% of stalls were open, we saw many tourists like us just wandering around the city, all the bars and restaurants remain open which is fine for the evenings, but not too much to do during the day. We spent a few days round the pool area which looks amazing but the only downfall was the lack of sun, my husband and i like to sunbathe but because the pool is on the 7th floor and the hotel itself is 20+ floors as is the sheraton next to it, the pool area only got sun for about an hour and half out of the day, for the rest of the day it was blocked by the hotels, obviously it was not cold, but still when on holiday you do want to feel the sun on your body.
The roof top bar was also a bit of a dissappointment, we went up for one after a night out and most of the bar was actually under a roof and only a few seats and tables outside, my husband and i have also stayed at the Rex, and the roof bar and the pool area are much better although the rooms are not as nice, but if we return to HCMC we would stay in the rex over the caravelle, which is a shame because the hotel is lovely and the buffet breakfast is amazing.....so much choice. Maybe if we visited when the new year was not happening we may not of noticed the problem with the pool because we would be out most of the day sight seeing, but if you like to sunbathe i would not recommned staying here.

“Beautiful hotel excellent location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

Great value for such a fantastic hotel, beds extremely comfortable and the biggest I have been in, comes with pillow menu! Drinks expensive on roof top in comparison to usual rate for drinks but this is to be expected as is a classy establishment. We stayed for 3 nights and would recommend it to anyone, excellent location and very comfortable hotel with fabulous pool area. Staff very attentive and pleasant didn't have much dealings with them but when we did they were nice !

“In the heart of Saigon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Very good, modern hotel located right in the centre of Saigon. Arrived here from Siem Reap in Cambodia and found it Ideally situatedin city centre, for visits to the Notre Dame Cathedral, Central Post Office (with its Renaissance architecture), former Presidential Palace (once HQ of Saigon Govt during American war), China Town (Binh Tay market), Thien Hau temple and the War Museum. This latter museum was originally constructed to illustrate the attrocities perpetrated by the Americans during the Vietnam War and it is very graphic. Not ideal for the squeamish! Of course it only portrays one side of the conflict so be prepared! Very good bar on 9th floor of hotel building where journalists were based during the war. Many good restaurants nearby.

Room Tip: Higher the better

“Perfect Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

Caravelle Hotel is located in the center of Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC). Rooms are clean and neat. Open buffet breakfast is the best in compare to other Vietnam hotels! The hotel is located between well-known European brand shops (LV,Armani,Gucci etc). This part of the city is similar to any other developed cities. 10 million motorbikes are running around you during your visit in the city! Never stop or run! Just continue to walk in a normal pace...Reception are is the weaknest of the hotel because it is very difficult to understand their English which is the way in the East..I wanted to make a dinner reservation in the hotel and spent 10 minutes, no luck! At the end , I wrote down what I wanted to say to them! There is a pool in the hotel.

Room Tip: Harbour view would be nicer!

“Great ambiance, but you pay for it”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

For a "5 star" hotel in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon), we booked a great deal at $158 USD/night. Perfect part of town, this price included the normally $29 breakfast buffet, and we'd heard good things. The gist:

Our actual room was nice (equated to a "Holiday Inn" in the states) but that was actually the least appealing part; the ambiance is beautiful. The breakfast buffet is the best I've ever seen with both local and Western choices in abundance; the staff/service is remarkably good; the location is perfect and the pool, shops and restaurants are all very nice on the property. The only thing that keeps me from rating this hotel a 5 is the price of everything within it, and around it. While the room was a great bargain for a 5-star hotel by U.S. standards, I also learned that the US dollar carried 4x its weight in Ho Chi Minh, so when you start adding up the expenses, it's definitely not any cheaper than the niceties of any other cosmopolitan hotel in a big city. Overall, very good and would stay there again, but would make sure to have lunch/dinner away from this neighorhood.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the pool or river.
