We stayed at the Continental Hotel over the New Year period and loved this old fashioned hotel. We were on the second floor overlooking the square. Having read the earlier reports about the noise from the building works on the other side of the road and having stayed in Saigon many times before we requested a room facing the Opera House as did our travelling companions. Our room was the biggest room I think we have ever slept in, the bathroom was straight out of the 70’s Home Beautiful magazine but everything worked. The hum from the traffic was audible but not intrusive and didn’t stop us from sleeping very well considering it was New Year and very, very busy. Something’s you need to know about this hotel. 1. It is government run therefore it can be a challenge, the staff are often trainees many of them have a limited amount of English and patience is required. 2. The hotel is very old and with anything in this age group upgrades to the rooms is a very slow progress therefore, sound proofing isn’t big on their agenda. 3. During the Xmas New Year period in Saigon it is wedding season and the Continental can have four weddings a day – sometimes two at the same time, so if the room overlooks the courtyard it could be noisy. 4. The breakfast buffet was a breakfast buffet the same the world over not remember able or remarkable. 5. The position of this Hotel in Dong Khoi Street is what makes the place – there is nothing like being in the middle of all the action. Would we stay their again definitely but just don’t expect it to be run like a big international hotel because you will be sadly disappointed.
