“Was interested in staying but DIDN'T”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

Forewarning: I did NOT stay at this hotel but I was so upset when I left the hotel I felt compelled to write a review because I've never felt so upset.
I came into this hotel to check out the room. Upon arrival no one was at the reception desk so a man sitting at the tour desk helped me. He showed me the room, definitely NOT $35 quality so I asked him for a better price and he said $30. It was still too high so I told him next door (Hanoi Hotel to the right) was charging $30 also (Quality of Hanoi Hotel is better). I seemed to push his buttons when I said this as he replied, "I DON'T CARE. YOU STAY THERE THEN. HERE IT'S $3O". I quickly said my thanks and left, having never met an employee who was so rude!!! I'm still upset and its been several days. Is it wrong to expect that if a person works in the field of hospitality they should be hospitable???

“Safe, clean enough”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

Stayed in the Sunshine 3 for 3 nights. Single room was 18 dollars with AC. I was initially showed a windowless room at the back of the hotel which had a musty, mold smell, and then went up 1 floor (on a very narrow, rigged up staircase) to another room with a window. Price quoted was 25 dollars, but they came down to 18 including breakfast with some bargaining.

Room was clean, AC worked, in-room computer old and slow but worked, bathroom adequate with a somewhat odd shower curtain, but clean and mold-free, hot water was hot. Bed not to hard, not too soft. Breakfast was adequate - good coffee, fruit, juice and tea, somewhat sketchier fried rice and noodles, and sometimes eggs, ham or bacon (if I ate early.) Staff were polite, friendly and helpful and there was no pressure to book tours, but they did help me with taxis etc when asked.

I'm not sure how people were supposed to get to these rooms, because the staircase I used was recently built chip-board and some metal railings/reinforcement. Steps were quite narrow and a bit hard to negotiate - would be a nightmare in a middle-of-the night emergency departure situation. However, I suspect set-ups like this are not uncommon in Hanoi given the age of buildings.

I did see a rat in the area of the kitchen, again, I suspect this is a Hanoi issue not a Sunshine 3 issue - as generally the hotel was very well cleaned.

Great location, friendly staff and decent rates. Rooms are clean - bit pushy with the tours though

“Distinctly average.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

Hanoi hotels, perhaps unsurprisingly, don't give you as much for your Dong as elsewhere in Viet Nam. If you just want budget stay in a good location, Sunshine 3 would probably fit your bill. However, the staff were apathetic and the breakfast was the worst we had experienced on our travels. Despite paying for a Deluxe room, our bathroom was a wet room with no separate shower, meaning everything was constantly soaking wet. There are many worse places to stay in Hanoi, but many better ones too.

“A good mid-range choice. For 20 US$ you can't really do better then this place on Hanoi!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

I stayed at Sunshine 3 hotel in September 2010. Didn't gave a reservation; I just walked in, took a look at the room, and after finding it ample, decided to take. I bargained for a small discount after deciding not to go for the breakfast.

The hotel was nothing sensational, but quite adequate which was good - it was basically what you're supposed to be getting for your money, something which is a rarity among Hanoi hotels! The room was clean and quiet, there was a computer with internet connection, the shower and the bed were OK and the room was cleaned every day. Service was good - no hassle to book any trip or other services from the travel agency.

Overall it is a trustworthy choice, something which cannot be said about many Hanoi hotels. If your maximum budget for a room is 25$ or less, Sunshine 3 would be a very good choice.
