“Take a huge miss on this one!”

After arriving and the hotel not being able to find our booking we were quickly bustled into a windowless room - near the noisy stairwell and elevator. To make matters worse on a cold winters evening in Hanoi we did not have any hot water and that the cold water that we were running was totally flooding the bathroom! After trying to call reception to ask about this we discovered that our phone did not work either! Nothing was done that evening to rectify the problems. The next morning in trying to move to another room we encountered a very argumentative female staff member who was not in the least bit helpful. Finally, we were moved to a room that we had booked. The next morning in checking out they wanted us to pay the full price for the terrible room on the first night. Leaving a hotel and having to argue about the room tariff does not leave a great feeling about the establishment. Further, as our driver was late to take us to the next destination the rude lady thought she would take great take to laugh and point at us thinking that we were forgotten. Seriously, take a big swerve from the Sunshine 2 Hotel and their rude members of staff.

“a gem of aplace to stay in”

Right in the middle of the old (i.e. interesting )Hanoi city there is this brilliant hotel which should be on the list of every traveller who does not want to spend a fortune on needless luxuries but nevertheless does like his en suite bathroom. That and internet in the room , a buffet breakfast and a lift. Plus an ATM at the entrance and a dozen restaurants on the street outside. Best of all, it's jewel in the crown, is the manageress who not only speaks fluent English but can arrange taxis , laundry, trips to Halong or Sapa etc.and who is an enchantress. We came back three times in our month's visit to N.Vietnam,8 nights in all. 'nuff said!!

“value above payment...pay for less”

It is located at the center of Hanoi city where you can walk to look around the city. Hotel is is very clean and safty for travellers eventhough its corridor is rather narrow but the hotel elavator has been designed for helping the travellers. In addition, there is a well-trained manager to provide services which are much appreciated. Next time if you would like to find the hotel in Hanoi you have keep in mind this hotel because of value above payment.

“As a student, this place was perfect!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2010

I stayed in Sunshine 2 for one month. Mrs. Moon gave me a special discounted rate as a student and because of my extended stay. She and the rest of the staff are very friendly and helpful. They were great in helping me get acclimated to the area, which was great considering how long I was staying! My room was very comfortable but because I asked for the cheapest available, it did not have a window to look outside--something I really didn't mind since I didn't spend much time in the room anyway. I did see other rooms that were much bigger and some even had balconies!
The rooms themselves are great: TV, AC, big bed and nice duvet cover, and computer (I used my own laptop with their ethernet cable most of the time). The room is nicely furnished and the staff always made sure to keep a plate of free fruit in my room, which I always enjoyed. Plus there's an elevator to get up to the higher floors for those nights when I just didn't want to climb the stairs!
The bathroom was my favorite part of the room. Really clean and look very new. The shower has an actual glass door (imagine that in Vietnam!) and waterfall shower head! Very relaxing!
The only downside I can think of is the lack of window in my room (although most rooms have windows I believe, if not balconies) and the fact that in the late morning (around 9) it an get a little noisy in the hallway. As a long-term student it was ok for me to sleep in some mornings, but if you're a tourist, you have no excuse to be sleeping in the late during your few days in Hanoi! Get out there and have fun!
The location is great, right in the middle of Ma May street in the Old Quarter. There are tons of really interesting shops, street food vendors, restaurants, and cafes nearby. This was the perfect situation for me, and I will miss my friends I've made here! If you are looking for a good value (I got a reduced $17/night, breakfast included), clean rooms (always spotless), and nice people, I would definitely recommend the Sunshine 2.

“There were blood stains on the sheets.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2010

Normally if I don't like a hotel, I don't review it because it's my personal taste, rather than the hotel. However, Sunshine 2 was the worst hotel I have stayed in in SE Asia and I don't want other people to experience it.
I booked it from Hoi An, based on the recommendation of a great agent who knew the owner/manager of Sunshine 2 (Mrs Moon). I never saw or met Mrs Moon, so can't comment. I wish I had met her.
To start with, they forgot to pick me up from the train station - and the Hanoi train station at 4.30am in the morning is NOT a pleasant place. They also wanted to charge me $5 for doing so. Most hotels in Hanoi pick you up from the train station for free. The taxi I caught only cost $2.50 - so the $5 is an overcharge. When I got to the hotel, they didn't seem to have my booking and kept reading the booking sheet I had been given in Hoi An (and I'd paid a deposit). They did offer to pay for my taxi and gave me 50,000 dong - then the guy who took me to my room took the money back from me, saying they would take it off the bill. They never did.
My booking sheet said that I had a view of the street. Nup - back room. When I asked, I was told I had a good room and nothing was done.
The room was clean enough, until I discovered the blood stains on the sheets - after I'd slept on them.
The staff were polite, but not helpful.
The buffet breakfast was one of the worst I'd had in Vietnam.
They offered to store my bags when I went to Halong Bay. I asked if they were being put into storage and was told yes. My bags were exactly where I left them when I came back to get them.
Needless to say - I checked out.
There are hotels so much better within metres of this hotel. I went to one that was under the same chain, charged me a couple dollars less and the rooms were almost as good as a 5-star hotel.
The only positive I can say is that the computer in the room was fast (but there is a good computer in most budget rooms in Hanoi) and the position is great (but there are plenty of others in just as good a position).
If this is your first hotel in Vietnam, you will be shocked at how much better rooms of the same cost are.
And the ATM at the door of the hotel didn't work for a friend of mine. Charged him a fee, deducted $ from his account, but didn't give him any money.
