We stayed for two nights at Sunshine 1 Hotel on 25 and 26 December 2011 when we first arrived in Vietnam from New Zealand. I'd booked it several weeks prior and wasn't required to pay a deposit. We also opted for the airport pick-up service that they offered which my research showed was only a dollar or two more than a taxi would have cost us. Our flight arrived late at night on Christmas Day so it was nice not to have to deal with taxis at the airport. Checking in was quick and easy.
Our room was on the 4th floor on the back side of the hotel so we didn't have any problems at all with noise from the street below. Keep in mind however that there is no elevator which wasn't a problem for us but might be if you have lots of or really heavy bags. The room was larger than we expected and clean. The bathroom was clean too, with a shower over a bathtub that had a shower curtain. It was also nice to have the computer in the room so we could email our families to let them know we'd arrived safely.
Breakfast the next morning was fresh bread, jam, small sausages, bacon, fruit and coffee/tea. Nothing fancy but adequate to get you going for the day. The staff were friendly and helpful, but not overly so to the point of being obtrusive.
The location of the hotel is very convenient. There are two ATM's close by (one of which is ANZ Bank) and lots of tour companies to help you (including in the hotel itself). We had organized a trip to Ha Long Bay with Handspan Travel and they are on the same street just a block away from the hotel which made it convenient since we had to be there early on the third day to catch the bus. It's also a 10-15 minute walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, which we found to be a good starting point for exploring more of the city on foot.
Overall this is a good choice if you like staying in accommodation that is basic but clean and convenient.
