“Quiet location within walking distance of all the mayhem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

We booked the Army Hotel because it had an outdoor pool (although we never used it in the end due to the terribly cold weather!). The room was clean, fairly basic but had a TV with a good choice of channels and free wifi. The breakfast was fine and if anything had run out, we only had to ask the staff and it was replenished within seconds. They cook eggs to order as well. The hotel is in a quiet location but easy 15 minute walk to the Old Quarter which we were glad we hadn't stayed in as it was pretty mental! My only criticism would be the very expensive laundry service - go down the road instead. I would definitely stay in the Army Hotel again.

“Pool and garden”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

This middle class hotel has a big garden with huge trees and a swimming pool, which is rare in Hanoi. It is my favorite for years. The rooms are fine, although a bit old. In summer during the local school holidays the swimming pool gets very crowded and insufficient chlorine is used for hygiene. In autumn and spring the pool is pleasant. In winter it is too cold to swim. The staff is friendly and the breakfast is okay. It is owned by the army and run by the military. The staff is friendly and the breakfast is okay. For the Dutch: er is bruinbrood en goudse kaas. I recommend this hotel for this price category.

“Affordable hotel with a pool!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 November 2011

Nice clean tidy hotel...balcony overlooking the pool area. Apparently there aren't many hotels with pools in Hanoi, that are affordable, according to our taxi driver! The pool is also open to the public so at times was fairly busy. Breakfast OK. Hotel within walking distance to nearly everything or a cheap cab ride.

“Good hotel for families in convenient location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2011

We stayed in the Army Hotel with our three children (aged 12, 10 and 5) and found it to be a nice, fairly basic hotel in a good location. Nothing fancy, but the staff were helpful, the pool was large, clean and uncrowded and our suite was large, clean and functional. Breakfasts were good, and you can even order drinks and snacks by the pool. You get what you pay for with this one (reasonably priced for central location with pool) but I would definitely recommend it! Nice quiet neighbourhood too, after the noisy streets of Hanoi.

“Great pool, but a little out of the way...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 May 2011

The Army Hotel boasts a fantastic swimming pool, and although I didn't use it personally, was advised that it was lovely and cool (not heated).
Definitely a "no frills" hotel, however the rooms at the Army Hotel are clean and quiet. We had a twin room with a balcony and it was very comfortable.
The bathroom was clean with a good shower.
Breakfast was buffet style with a variety of Asian or Western food.
Reception check in was quick, but staff didnt appear very friendly.

The hotel is a little out of the way and not in close walking distance to the Old Quarter or lake attractions. You can walk to attractions, but allow a little extra time, and of course there are numerous busy roads to cross.
You can catch a Cyclo, but negotiate the price first!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a balcony.
