“Disappointed with bait and switch and poor attitude”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We booked a king bed room in the historic wing. Upon opening the door to the room, we were met with an overwhelming blast of odor - sewer gas type odor. We immediately asked the bellman to get us a different room. ( By the way, the room itself was a beautiful large and gracious room and bathroom as described on the hotel website and reviews on trip advisor.). We were informed that there were no rooms left in the historic wing but that they would upgrade us to a higher level room in the modern wing. We were taken to the room, which was smaller, a bit garish and had no separation between the bedroom and bathroom. It was true that this room was listed at a higher room rate than the historic room, and I couldn't figure out why until I discovered that we were on a Club floor which is supposed to include a lounge with refreshments and breakfast, 24 hour butler etc. I inquired (twice) whether we now had Club floor privileges and was told no, that our "upgrade" did not include Club privileges. Some upgrade. After some observation of the lobby of the historic wing, I became pretty sure that it was empty. My guess is that everyone booking in that wing is shown to the smelly room and then switched over the modern wing, where the tour groups are. Of course, the next day we found another hotel (Conifer) that has more respect for it's customers, and left.

“Great Hotel with great decor”

Stayed in the Old Wing 1/F Grand Luxury Room...room is huge with a large marble bathroom.
The ambiance of the old wing is just great so as the room.
The service of the hotel particular that of the lobby coffee shop does not commensurate with the status of the hotel... Vietnam Spice Market also serves great Vietnam food....
Would love to revisit it...just for the decor ...... cosy and classy

Room Tip: Old Wing Grand Room is a must

“Best Hotel in Vietnam”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

We stayed two nights in Metropole. One night at Premium room then Business upgraded room another night. The best hotel in Vİetnam! Rooms are spotless, spacious, feels like at home (sheets and towels). King size bed, shower and old style bathtub are separated. While I take the shower, my daughter enjoyed the bathtub watching Disney channel in front of her.
It was a great experience... Breakfast was good. Garden and pool are beautifully kept. Highly recommended. Location is great. I had laundry done and brought very clean and perfect. There was a very good gourmet shop in the hotel for sandwiches to go. Hotel service is excellent.

Room Tip: Business rooms facing the garden and the pool .Very colonial..Real Vietnam is Hanoi!

“CHARMING COLONIAL FAVOURITE”

My husband and I booked a "GRAND LUXURY ROOM HISTORICAL WING" (their description of their ordinary rooms, which are far from ordinary!) for 4 nights in January 2012. From the second we walked through the front door we felt at home. We had two rooms, broken by an overnight Halong Bay (booked by hotel, separate review) both of which were spacious and quiet. The first floor one overlooked a first floor garden, the second was on the third floor with a stunning view of internal gardens and the sparkling lights all around the pool. The bathrooms were wonderfully huge. Breakfast was to die for (my favourite the straight-off-the-griddle cooked-before-my-eyes waffle - sooo decadent I know) and my husband enjoyed watching the chef's deft egg preparation. And the cappuccino coffee was HOT which is important to us. The staff were perfectly attentive, charming and friendly. It seemed only natural that one of our fellow guests was a body-guarded member of a royal family, along with his whole entourage! I loved the shops attached to the hotel - more for looking than for buying - Hermes, LV, Cartier, etc, and the hotel patisserie was a delight for a snack or picnic goodies. Service not too cloying, a relaxed happy feel about the whole place. We just loved this hotel.

Room Tip: ask for one overlooking the garden and pool - the third floor had the better view - either historica...
