We booked a king bed room in the historic wing. Upon opening the door to the room, we were met with an overwhelming blast of odor - sewer gas type odor. We immediately asked the bellman to get us a different room. ( By the way, the room itself was a beautiful large and gracious room and bathroom as described on the hotel website and reviews on trip advisor.). We were informed that there were no rooms left in the historic wing but that they would upgrade us to a higher level room in the modern wing. We were taken to the room, which was smaller, a bit garish and had no separation between the bedroom and bathroom. It was true that this room was listed at a higher room rate than the historic room, and I couldn't figure out why until I discovered that we were on a Club floor which is supposed to include a lounge with refreshments and breakfast, 24 hour butler etc. I inquired (twice) whether we now had Club floor privileges and was told no, that our "upgrade" did not include Club privileges. Some upgrade. After some observation of the lobby of the historic wing, I became pretty sure that it was empty. My guess is that everyone booking in that wing is shown to the smelly room and then switched over the modern wing, where the tour groups are. Of course, the next day we found another hotel (Conifer) that has more respect for it's customers, and left.
