“Unless you are part of a Chinese tour group, you probably don't want to stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 April 2010

This place is cheap and cheesy - outdoor carpet with cigarette burns, chipped furniture, the cheapest of everything imaginable.

At check in, we were presented with a list of items in the room (short list, as the rooms are really sparse) and told we would be paying for any losses (seems they cater to the thief segment).

The rack rate was $85 US, but you can be sure that the bus loads of tour groups are paying half that. The whole place is an ashtray and you can do sooooooooooo much better elsewhere. We skipped out after one night for the Novotel instead

“A very pleasant hotel”

The Asean is a large, well run hotel, with good views of the harbor from most if not all rooms, It is a short taxi ride to the Tourist Harbor. The location is in the Bai Chay part of Halong City, where most of the hotels and the Tourist Harbor are located.

The rooms are a decent size and well appointed, the bathrooms sparkling clean.

The breakfast buffet has a wide selection to suit most tastes. Dinner in the downstairs restaurant (there are two - on different floors) was served quickly, the food was good and not expensive for this catagory of hotel.

There are three free internet booths in the lobby, An outdoor pool, sauna, massage, fitness room etc offer recreation opportunities. I found all the staff most accomodating.

“Empty hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2008

When we arrived at the hotel at around midday, there was nobody at the
door, no bellboy, nobody at the reception desk. Eventually some people
turned up.

We were shown to our room, which looked nice, but had a terrible smell
coming from the bathroom which was spotlessly clean! So we asked to have our room changed.

Same problem again. The bathroom was sparkling, but again there was that terrible smell. We found out that it was probably due to the window not opening at all and there was no extractor fan either, so after a shower, the whole room was very steamy and wet, including the hairdryer.

We had one lunch there, which was not very good. Breakfast was ok, no more.

The girl at the front desk arranged for a boat trip. The boat looked old and dirty. I think the woman on the boat was her sister, as they really looked alike. She tried to sell us fake pearl necklaces, and when we refused, her attitude changed from friendly to hostile.

Although we paid for the hotel before we left to the hotel website, they were going to charge us, and it's only after a few phone calls that they realised that the room was already paid for.

The hotel is fairly big, but completely empty. I think only 2 or 3 rooms were occupied while we were there. The atmosphere of an emply hotel is not a good one.

But overall the room was clean, the bathroom very smelly but very clean.
