“Count your towels and bathrobes.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2010

We stayed at this hotel on Friday 9 April 2010, and fortunately only for one night. As others have described, the hotel is located slightly remote, however, it is closed to a couple of big sea food restaurants. Our room on 10th Fl. has a beautiful view of the bay, spacious enough for an extra bed for our daughter, while bathroom is not only roomy but comes with one small soap, a blue gluey bath- gel, shampoo,2 toothbrush kits, shower caps and a little comb, 2 sets of bath towels, 2 sets of hand towels, 2 sets of face/wash towels and an extra bath towels hanging at the back of the bathroom door, looked used.
It has a nice and almost 360 degree view of the bay and the hills from the 15th floor bar and balconies. I thought my only complaints were the hard mattress, pilows and very smoky breakfast area at M Floor where guests were eating breakfast and smoking at the same time and a guest pushing us to get to the food which were almost non edible anyway. Furthermore when we asked for a cup of warm milk for our daughter we were told rigidly that they did not have any. Upon checking out, we received our passports which they kept during the stay as part of their regulation; after payment, and getting ready to leave- we were told to wait for the room service report .To our surprise, we were told taht one bathrobe is missing and one hand towel and a small towel were not in the room. It took a while to explain taht we had 2 sets of towels, and that there was one used towel. My husband had to accompany the front desk lady to go back to our room. It was a very deameaning and frustrating experience. There were three of us and therefore they expected three sets of towels and robes ! I should have demanded three sets upon chec kin in. My husband also offered the front desk to check our bags which consisted of a sport back pack, my totebag, Coles Supermarket bag, and our daughter tiny backpack. Where could you store those towels and robes ?
If you really must stay at this hotel, please do count your towels and robes !

“Beautiful off the beaten track hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 January 2010

Stayed in the suite of this hotel (kids had a room which was also pretty good) which was magnificent.
Service was fabulous and room was spacious, clean and lovely - bedding was especially comfortable. Robes, slippers, all comforts provided and MOST reasonable price.
FABULOUS top floor bar area with terrific views and good cocktail list.
Seems to be off beaten track area. We walked to local markets next morning, and were stared at - like western folk were a rarity (but we thought this was kind of cool). Not much to see in this area except the markets though.
Ate at the local seafood restaurant - NOT IMPRESSED - seemed like we were ignored because we were westerners.
Breakfast was largely traditional vietnamese (rice etc), but they did have a good selection of fruit and an 'omelet cook'.

“4 Star facility - 2 star experience”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2007

Located away from the main city, the Mihtrin is indeed a 4 star property. A quality well built hotel with excellent facilities. Pool, restaurant, massage etc.
However thats all that is 4 star about the place.
Its in a new and developing area, but with nothing around it in the terms of restaurants, shopping or anything a tourist would be interested in seeing it isolated to say the least..
The hotel building is well appointed and the rooms massive.
We had a nice HUGE bathroon with a nice spa sytle bath in it. However the bath had a large crack in the fibreglass shell. Disappointing.
We were met by the Asst Manager on arrival which was a nice touch. He said "any problems, let me know" Little did he realise he would regret that suggestion.
Breakfast terrible. A large selection on offer, Not that I would eat mnay things on offer, how ever simple things like bacon and eggs, were of inedible quality. No OJ (as usual in Vietnam) and what juices they did have weren't chilled.
We decided to have room service in the evening rather than use the well appointed resaurnt, and seeing as there was no where local that we would eat in. No mention of room service on the facilities listing. A simple over sight and on enquiring they did offer the service it and the meals we had were passable.
Internet facilities were slow, very slow, and when the power cuts, (not the hotels fault) they had a back up generator were not happening they were that slow I gave up. They also like to charge $US 1 / hr. Not worth the effort. IMO. Drop that idea.
To his credit the Asst GM asked our opinions from a westerner point of view. i filled out the company suyvey on exit and he also gave me some letterhead to add my additioal comments. he assured me they would all be addressed and there were many more that I won't bore you all with here.

Nice pool and roof top views of the barren and developing area.
In time the area will develop into a nice out of town experience I am sure. Until then give it a miss.

  • Liked — Excellent sized room
  • Disliked — Poor breakfast and internet facility. Isolated location. NO where near anything.

“A New Business Class Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2007
14
people found this review helpful

Situated on the western edge of HaLong Bay City, this four star hotel is a comfortable place to stay full of the usual amenities but, staffing aside, far removed from any authentic Vietnamese experience. The south facing rooms offer a respctable view of the HaLong Bay but the views will quickly disappear as more hotels are built nearer to the water's edge. If you are seeking a four star western business hotel this is a good place to be. The large rooms (as with the hotel) are new, feature king sized beds, writing desk, 2 lounge chairs and table, end tables with bedside lamps, modern TV with remote, in-room safe, mini-fridge stocked with beer, soft drinks, hard liquors and snacks, surprisingly little closet and shelving space, assorted light fixtures, room key (not electronic swipe key) for door entry, security chain, peephole, phones both bedside and bathroom, bedside clock with electriconic calendar and alarm, interior access door giving the option of linking adjoining rooms, and a nicely finished bathroom. The bathroom features a modern toilet, full sized tub and shower unit, and sink in granite-like counter top above which is placed a wall to wall mirror. The high wall mounted shower head is of the handheld hose with spray variety, with plastic shower curtain. Also provided are the usual complimentary soap, shampoo, bath gell, comb, 2 toothbrush, 2 safety razor, 2 shower cap, cotton swabs, hand held hair dryer, 2 glasses, and white terrycloth towel set consisting of 2 washcloths, 2 handtowels and 2 bathtowels with floormat.
Rooms boast a 9 foot ceiling height, full width windows, sheers, opaque curtain, tastefully papered walls, fully tiled bathroom to the 8 foot level, and carpeted main room. Though my carpet was new and somewhat "clean", it appeared soiled and in need of a good steam cleaning. Room amenities included tissues, sewing kit, 2 pair slippers, 2 white terry cloth robes, 4 wooden hangars (about all the clothing you could hang in the woefully inadequate closet space), 2 bottles of complimentary water (tap water is posted unsafe to drink), and complimentary coffee and tea with kettle and 2 sets of cups and saucers.
Notable negatives include a location 5 km removed from the tourism boat tour docks, and a location which promises to provide plenty of construction activity in the coming year as the site is part of a massive well planned modern development aiming to create a very upscale neighbourhood of shops, hotels, and private vacation residences with wide boulevards and tasteful landscaping. The pile drivers were at work from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. during my stay and while the sound did not bother me (the rooms being well sound insulated), the pounding was nonetheless audible and might bother some. Similarly, my bedside clock sounded the alarm at 6:00 a.m. though I had not set it. Thoughts that it was my foolishness for not checking it before retiring were interrupted at 6:30 a.m by the wake up call from the front desk notwithstanding I had not asked for one. Also while I like a firm mattress, the hotel certainly provides the firmest I can recall, too firm for some, I suspect though not uncomfortable for me. The pillows provided were of the thinner Vietnamese variety but soft as was the padded headboard. Rooms are equipped with three mirrors, in bath, over desk and full length dressing mirror.
The hotel has an outdoor pool (unheated and unsupervised - open 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.), complimentary weight and exercise room, hair salon, massage, jacuzi, sauna, gift shop, large lobby, and serves breakfast lunch and dinner. Baby cots are free, as is car parking, extra beds cost US$15. Also available are internet in the lobby (though only one of two terminals were working), a small gift shop, mail service, available non-smoking rooms, and an in room directory of extensive services.
TV channels were BBC (newsworld), TV5 (Monde - french), CCTV4 (chinese), HBO, MTV, DW (deutsche welle - german), Star Sports, VCTV1 (Viet), Cartoon Channel, VTV1 (Viet), VTV2 (Viet), Discovery, NHK (newslink Hong Kong), and Arirang. Television reception and picture quality was excellent.
The breakfast buffet features, orange juice, milk, mineral water, guava juice, iced tea, coffee, choice of fruit (banana, pineapple, watermelon, melon, papaya), packaged american style yogurt in the little plastic tubs with foil top, choice of cereals (corn flakes, granola, bran buds), american style strip bacon, boiled potatoes, fried hash brown potato cakes, rice porridge, pork sausage, pancakes, assorted salads and greens, 8 varieties of bread, eggs prepared in front of you any style with assorted incredients, and pho. Breakfast is served from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on the second floor mezzanine overlooking the lobby.
For the price (US$85. sea view, US$80 mountain view), you get a good business class hotel in what promises to be a developing upmarket resort style location, but without any charm. Deluxe Rooms go for $10. above the above rates and a Suite will set you back $160. This is a business hotel which is good at its business but do not expect to gain any insights into the local culture here. Views of the bay aside, lack of cultural clues means this hotel could be located anywhere.

  • Liked — New facility, breakfast
  • Disliked — Culturally sterile, isolated location
  • Tips/Secrets — Check out the view prior to paying extra for the sea view room.

“What a great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2006
9
people found this review helpful

Of course we went to Halong to visit the Bay which is well worth seeing.
But a very pleasent surprise was this hotel, it is clean, modern, well run and has a great breakfast.
But the best thing about the place was the staff, they are very friendly and helpful and nothing seems to be too much trouble.
The staff are only too happy to assit you with just about anything in the way of tours, site seeing and information about the area.

The hotel is on the edge of town so to see most things you will need a cab but they are cheap and ask the staff and they will have one out front in a couple of minutes.
The hotel is in a quiet spot and it is a pleasent place to spend some time.
This hotel has a 4 star rating and it certainly deserves it, we have stayed in many hotels in many countries and I rate this place right up there with the best of them.
if you ever visit Halong city I highly recommend a stay at this lovely hotel.
