When it first opened (25 years ago?) it must have been THE place to stay and while it remains a good quality hotel, it’s fair to say it is it is starting to age a bit. However, our stay was nothing short of extremely comfortable and having a sea view was a bonus.
It’s recently had a new manager brought in from the Imm Fusion in Bangkok and Khun Saeri, having worked his magic at the cosy, boutique hotel in the capital, has now been tasked in repeating his success at the much bigger Grand Sole. After just six months in charge, he is already leaving his mark.
Set back from the main road, the property is quiet and boasts all the necessary amenities to ensure you have a good break. Entering into the spacious foyer, checking in simplicity itself and before you know it, you are taking the lift up to your room.
The first thing you realise is the size of the room- huge, followed closely by how big the bed is- it’s enormous. Good quality bed linen and comfortable pillows ensure a great night’s sleep. Room facilities include full carpeting (though showing signs of wear and tear), bedside lamps and tables, colour TV with many channels in several languages (including Russian), a mini safe, air-conditioning, fridge and electric kettle. There is even a seating area with coffee table to allow you to sit and enjoy the view.
The bathroom offers a choice of both bath and shower, you get both hot and cold running water and also a full set of complimentary shampoos, conditioner and soap. A hair dryer is another bonus.
The only area I could fault is that there is no wi-fi reception in the room but you get free coverage downstairs in the lobby or by the pool- which is another huge bonus of the establishment. The outdoor pool is extremely popular and one of the focal points.
Breakfast is served until 10:00 and while we didn’t sample the offerings our friends did and they more than happy at the variety, choices and quantity.
Finally, there is plenty to see and do around the area, from a handy 7-11 almost on the premises, to bars and restaurants galore starting nearby. A 10 minute walk will get you to Central Center [sic] Shopping mall and the beach is barely a few minutes’ walk away. You’ll need the Baht Buses to get to the legendary “Walking Street”, which is a must and any journey will set you back THB 10 per trip.
