“Clean? Yes. Service? Disgusting.”
I stayed at the Mecure hotel just last week. My Mum and I decided to do a last minute get away to the sunshine for Christmas. My issue is more with Pattaya itself rather than the hotel - however I would advise any future holiday makers planning on staying here to be warned that the food practically inedible and, ironically, expensive! While there is a large selection of food (at breakfast), you will actually be surprised by the amount of food that looks fit for a bin rather than your plate. Breakfast consisted of chicken sausages, burnt beans, fresh fruit (although I wouldn't say it's that fresh when you see flies all over it) and pastries, cereal etc. They do have an omlette bar where you can see the eggs cooked in front of you. Great! you think, until you get it back to your table and realise there's a variety of peppers and other unidentifiable substances entwined within. In addition, at the time of my stay the hotel was full of Russians who were very keen to barge you out of the way to grab the last crossiant (the only edible thing I could find) without so much as an apology or acknowledgement or their rudeness.
The hotel staff in general are particuarly rude. With our holiday, as we were staying over New Year's Eve, we were forced to pay for a ticket to the New Years Eve gala being held at the hotel (this was non-deductable from the holiday package price). We went along (at £80 a head), and were told our ticket entitled us to the buffet dinner as well as 'free flow' wine. We got to our table to find that there was no wine awaiting us unlike the other tables. After lots of asking, a waitress finally bought a bottle over (Mecure sparkling wine must be defined as acid in a bottle if this was anything to go by). Still, we made the most of it and got involved with the celebrations. Needless to say it wasn't long until we requested another bottle. At which point a different waiter came over with the bottle and the bill. I explained that we had paid for the 'free flow' wine and that we therefore would not be paying. He continued to persist, so I explained again, which is when he then took to ignoring me, starring in to the distance. I gave up and my Mother intravened. Still refusing to budge, the arguement still prevailed and he was adament that this was to be paid for. This was extremely frustrating given we had paid £160 between us to have the please of dinner and free flow wine, Eventually the hotel manager was able to resolve the issue but this is just a small taster of what staff are like at this hotel. Rude, sneaky and extremely discourtious.
If you are thinking of travelling to Thailand, Pattaya should only be recommened to middle aged (or elderly, in some cases) men looking to pursue a thai woman - there is no other reason to visit this resort. The streets of Pattaya are smelly and extremely dirty. It's riddled with beggers and those selling jewelley / DVD's / belts and Go-Go bars (you will get hassled no matter what bar you choose to drink in). If you think Pattaya will bring relaxation, think again! Trying to cross a road is like a game of Russian Roulette with motorists and motorcylists ignoring pedestrian crossings. You literally have to just hope for the best when attempting to cross. As for finding any where to eat where you won't get food poisioning - good luck to you. It's a filthy city.
As for the Mecure being just minutes away from the beach, I wouldn't say that's strictly true. Yes it is true there is a 'beach' just minutes away but what they don't tell you is that it's 1 sun lounger in width and the beautiful blue sea is a port with rubbish bobbing up and down. It's hardly the image you see in the brochures, that's for sure. Jomtein beach isn't much better - it's wider but the sea isn't much cleaner!
Pattaya is not what Thailand is about - it's Blackpool in Asia. Do not be tempted by the cheap price, it's cheap for a reason! Fortunately I have been to Thailand before and have not been put off traveling back to the country but I would imagine for some first time travellers it absolutely would. When I do return, it WON'T be to Pattaya.
