“Tropical Tranquilty”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

My wife and I just returned from a three week vacation in Thailand and both agree that the week we spent at the Renaissance was superb. Our impression is that this is a small boutique resort situated in lush tropical gardens directly on the beach. As a Marriott rewards platinum members were upgraded to a garden villa and it was if we were miles from anyone else. This was ironic as the hotel was at 100% occupancy during our stay. Still it was tranquil and quiet. If your budget allows investigate the possibility of staying in one of the villas. Each one has their own private entry, patio and plunge pool. The rooms were spotless with incredible bedding and linens with effective A/C.
Having said this is it would not be choice to stay for someone looking for nightlife. The two adjacent cities of Lamai and Cheweng have resorts and hotels that would provide and cater to this criteria. However, for a middle aged couple looking and needing time to reconnect it was a romantic setting that perfectly filled our needs.
A couple items to note, the beach is lovely albeit small with a high tide mark that encroaches on your beach lounger. The beach is clean with white sand and warm ocean water that is clean and blue. The water is remarkably shallow even as you walked out a few hundred feet from the beach even at high tide. Perhaps not the beast for swimming or playing in waves but ideal for cooling off from the hot sun. Still plenty of sun loungers and towels for a relaxing day.
We ate all our meals at the resort and found the food excellent and with good value. There are nightly theme dinners at the resort. We enjoyed the beach barbecue buffet and our favorite Tawann. We had two dinners at Tawann with free flowing wine with a stunning view of the sea and sunset. Nothing short of magical with memories that we will treasure.

“Blissful retreat.....”

Just spent a week here in a room 102 - seriously blissed out - BUT we were looking for peace and quiet - probably too quiet if you want easy a access to night life etc. Prices for F & B higher than local caffeand service bit iffy sometimes, just not coordinated on one night! The resort is spotless and well maintained and the front part sympathetic to the shoreline with individual low rise bungalows. Easy swimming, as shallowlish sea and free kayaks.

Room Tip: The beachfront villas with pool are lovely, but note that the pool is between them and the beach...

“Heaven on earth”

The Renaissance Koh Samui was heaven on earth to us. During our stay in the resort we were amazed by the tremendous effort and dedication every single staff member showed us. Having breakfast was like a warm welcome. Koi and her team even knew our drinks and always made sure that our favorite table on the balcony was available.

Besides the breakfast, the Quan Spa was something truly inspiring aswell. Getting a Thai massage while hearing the waves of the sea clash on the coast line is realy something worth trying.

Every day the hotel has a different theme night, from beach BBQ's to Lobster nights in Tawann

We would like to thank the whole team for this wonderful experience and can recommend this hotel to every honeymooning couple.

“Pretty, but catering to north american/western european tastes”

This hotel is trying to be a 'resort', but it's just not quite there. Good things: The staff are all very helpful and chatty, and we loved the pools. The breakfast buffet (pancakes and omelets made to order) is amazing, and you are spoiled for choice. Not so good things: Although the villas are nicely decorated, the floor was a bit dirty. Be warned that in early September the tide is so low that while you can wade/splash-around, you definitely cannot swim. But our major disappointment would be the location...you really are stuck here. Although we walked to Chaweng Beach, it was a long walk, maybe 45 minutes, and you don't want to be doing that in the evening with all of the mosquitoes. So, you need to hire a motorbike or take taxis out every night, which really adds to the cost of the trip. The restaurant and cafe on site are OK, but the food is clearly adapted for the presumed western palate. Have to admit that we only stayed here because we could use Marriott points, but I don't think I would go back.

Dear FlyingGirLB,

warm greetings from Koh Samui, Thailand.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your recent stay at the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort & Spa and sharing your impressions with us.
I am sorry to hear that you experienced dirty floors in our Pool Villas during your stay, please accept my sincere apologies for that. I am not sure if you have already experienced our newly renovated Pool Villas since you mention the tides in September, but we completed the renovation in December and all villas have a new look and the wooden floors also received a makeover. Thank you for your positive comments on our associates, the breakfast and the pools. Even though the majority of our guests are Caucasian, our Thai Executive Chef is very proud of the fact that we serve authentic Thai food and also some of our Food & Beverage promotions have a strong focus on local food. If your travels would bring you back to our resort one day I hope you have the chance to experience our “Thai Food Lovers Fantasy” or our “Wok, Wok, Wok” buffet at the beach.

Dear FlyingGirLB, thank you again for your stay, should there be anything else that I can be as of assistance with, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.
With best regards,

“Tranquil location...but....”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I think the hotel has ben here for about 13 years but only taken over by the Renaissance a couple of years ago.
The hotel is in beautiful grounds and sympathetically built in its environment unlike the Conrad Hilton - a blot on the landscape. Having said that it is a bit out of the way and you get ripped of by taxis.
Lovely beaches but limited water activities.
Staff were friendly but service levels were slow. We were there during Chinese New Year and there did not seem to be anywhere near enough staff to offer quick service. W spa shed on a villa and it was well worth it. Very well appointed with own plunge pool and jacuzzi. But the whole resort is showing its age and needs an overhaul.
We did have a bit of a disaster the first night in the Banana Leaf restaurant. It took 20 minutes to get napkins and menus and then the first 3 bottles of wine I tried to order were all out of stoic. In the end I went to the wine display and picked one. If it had not been for Woody's hard work we would have left the restaurant.
The hotel managed kept trying to overcome the difficulties but it never really happened for us.
Plenty of good restaurants in Chaweng but always taxis were needed. The hotel ran a bus to Chaweng but only twice a day with the let being at 4.30pm!
As others have said there are plenty of hotels and rented villas available and better located. So an average experience in a in above average grounds, but out of the way location.

Room Tip: They cost more of course but go for a villa. You get so much privacy, they are quiet, well appointed...

Dear Tony J,

warm greetings from Koh Samui, Thailand.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your recent stay at the Renaissance Koh Samui Resort & Spa and sharing your impressions with us. I appreciate your nice comments on our grounds and gardens, since the hotel is 8 years old and has been under Marriott management for 6 years, our landscaping team is giving its best to maintain the area and to keep a natural look. Please accept my apologies for the shortcomings during the busy Chinese New Year period, situations like the ones you experienced are not the norm and we are permanently in the process of improving our product and services. I am glad to hear that you were satisfied with the efforts made by our restaurant associate.
