Before becoming a favorite tourist destination, Samui used to be a sleepy fisherman town, where there were countless number of coconut trees. I had a chance to visit Samui when I was in high school almost 30 years ago. I remembered lodging in a small bungalow owned by my friend's father. Even though there were several inconveniences of reaching Samui and staying there, my memory of Samui is quite pleasant. A few weeks ago, I had a chance to return to Samui, and chose to stay at the Kala resort. Several things at the Kala resort reminded me of Samui of the old days. First of all, the staff were friendly and helpful. I particularly like my Deluxe room, which is modeled after a traditional Southern Thai room with modern facilities, of course. The room has wide glass doors and a fabulous unobstructed sea view. If the doors are open from late at night to early in the morning, you can turn off the air conditioner and experience cool sea breeze. In addition, I like the attempt by the resort management to be evironmentally friendly. Also, small unique things that gave me much impression were coconut soap and coconut jam because I am an avid coconut lover. One disadvantage of this resort may be its lack of beach front. However, that was no big deal to me because a short walk would take me to a public beach. If I would like to go to a faraway beach, I could easily ask for a service of a resort car. Unfortunately, my stay at Kala resort was quite short. I am looking for a longer stay the next time I go to Samui.
