My 24 y/o daughter, who is living in Thailand was coming to meet my SO and me in Chiang Mai and we were booked to stay in the main building. When we were taken to the room, we knew it would not work for the 3 of us. Although the room was quite clean, it was very small with two twin beds and a small area to stick a cot, which we would have had to pay an extra $30 US per night (that included pushing the twins together, would have been $20 w/o), which is a lot of money in Thailand (almost half the price of the room!).
We were then told for the same price, we could have a room in the annex (no cot fee needed) but there was no elevator. The guy at the front desk seemed to be surprised that we would choose to stay there. The four flights of stairs were well worth it, because for the same amount of money we got a suite. The room was perfect, there was a separate living room with one of those Ikea style couches that you open up by pushing the back down. My daughter said it was probably the most comfortable 'bed' she had slept in since traveling around Thailand.
The only thing that bothered me was that the floor did not seem very clean. It is the custom in Thailand to take off your shoes before entering a room, but I chose to wear my socks while I was indoors. I thought maybe because we weren't scheduled to stay in the room it hadn't been finished being cleaned, but I noticed a clump of hair under the bedside table on the first night that never seemed to go away over our four day stay.
Breakfast was included in the price of the room. I thought the food was just okay, but there was plenty of variety - breakfast foods as well as traditional Thai food which my SO thought was good, but didn't appeal to me in the morning. The coffee was surprisingly tasty, not Nescafe (which I find to be undrinkable) that is served in a lot of restaurants in Thailand.
Overall it was a very good value and we loved our visit to Chiang Mai.
