We had a wonderful stay at the Chiang Mai River House. We received a warm welcome when we were picked up from our previous hotel and instantly fell in love with the spacious and cool house on the river.
The premises are kept meticulously clean and Amarin who runs the B&B has thought about all of the little touches that make spending time at a B&B wonderful (she is fluent in both French and English).
From free access to drinking water to a well stocked mini-bar and delicious breakfasts, we always felt taken care of. We were able to do our laundry and spent several long days lounging on the patio watching the water roll by. You can hear the road nearby during the day and there are some local thai restaurants and clubs that play music at night, but the peaceful surroundings and calm of the B&B make it all fade into the background.
If you want to be in the middle of the action and night life, you might want to skip this place and stay in the Old City or Night Bazaar areas. If you are looking for a delightful escape from the craziness and frenetic activity of touristy Thailand, this is the place for you.
It is only a 10 minute TucTuc ride from the heart of the action if you do feel like going out, and Amarin will provide you with a map written in Thai that you can show the drivers so that they know exactly how to bring you back at the end of the night. We rented a scooter for a couple days, which was perfect (we recommend going to Mr. Mechanic... good insurance and great bikes).
This is also a great location for families. It has lots of space and quiet premises, internet, TV, DVD's, access to laundry and kitchen facilities and a separation from the crazy action of downtown.
We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit Chiang Mai!
