I would rate this hotel a 3 to 4-star if you are staying here for business convenience but only a 2-star if by chance you are stuck here for any leisure time; I am currently here for both but it was a business client that booked me to stay here this trip to Bangkok. If you are familiar at all with Bangkok, you’ll know that traffic here is horrific, so be sure to stay in an area close to whatever your goals are while in the city. If you have business in the area where the Grand Millennium is located, then it’s a relatively good hotel to base yourself. The sky train is close by the hotel as well, so if meetings/shopping/restaurants along the train line, it’s very convenient and the hotel is adequate. I am staying in the hotel for four days this trip, so let me begin with the business aspect of staying here. I arrived at about 5pm and it took over half an hour to check in as there were only two front desk staff working. The woman who eventually checked me in was first busy checking a gentleman out and making sure that he had paid all his minibar charges. As I waited five, ten, fifteen minutes, she could have once turned my way (or the now three other people waiting behind me to be checked in a well) to say “I’m so sorry” or “Excuse the delay and one of us will be with you asap”…but no. Not a word. Finally, she turned my way (without any kind of apology for the long delay) and I have to say that the man behind me went to step next to me to be checked in before me, but I believe my glare his way stopped him in his tracks. Upon the advice of an earlier trip advisor review, I decided to upgrade to the Club. Well worth it I can say after four days of using the facilities. The room was originally about US$ 140++ and it was only US$ 40/night++ for the Club upgrade (worth it for alcohol consumption alone). I am also glad that I upgraded to the Club as I found that the room I stayed in was so claustrophobic that I could barely stand to work in the room (I had a non-smoking room but even so, it was stuffy and the windows could not be opened for “fresh” air…of course that’s an oxymoron in Bangkok, but still…having some fresh air current in the room would have been very welcome…so many hotel rooms in Bangkok have balconies so I find that rooms w/o, or at least windows that open, are unbearable). The Club’s cocktail/canapés were excellent I must say, and certainly enough variety/good taste to make an entire meal if one so desired (nice large windows/great view, large space, tastefully decorated, etc.). On the other hand, the hotel does not have CNN (BBC, Aljazeera and of all things, the Fox News Channel….) so that is a complaint of mine (perhaps not a complaint by many others….)….apparently they used to carry CNN but the management has decided to change their usage package. The gym is quite good and staff both attentive and yet don’t bother you if you don’t want the constant attention that so many bored gym staff give (the cardio equipment all have individual televisions). As for the pool, it is tiny but actually quite good if you want to do serious laps. On the leisure side though, it’s not a pool you’ll want to spend much quality time/snoozing time at as the pool is surrounded by construction right now and it’s very very noisy. For me, it would work quite well for an outdoor nap, as there is blaring white noise from both the pool fountain and a water wall behind the deck chairs (it’s so loud that it drowns out the construction noise but if you want silence, this is not the pool ambience you want…no sense of luxury at all…see photos). In terms of dining, the restaurants looked somewhat inviting but the hotel was freezing. There is a small outdoor area outside the first floor bar but they wouldn’t serve lunch outside, so I found some wonderful little restaurants in the area that I used (although Soi Cowboy not exactly an area I’d want to dine in alone as a solo expat female). One night with a client, it was getting late after our meetings and we were able to dine in this bar area outside in the hotel, but the food was simply awful. We ordered a margarita pizza and a cheeseburger. The hostess brought out condiments in little bowls for the pizza and as it was a bit dark outside, I asked her what they were and her reply was that she didn’t know (you’d think they would at least train the waitresses about condiments?!). The pizza was cold and obviously not made in the hotel (I wonder if it came out of a box in the freezer)…there wasn’t a fresh ingredient in sight on the pizza (and certainly no fresh basil); I managed to scrape a bit of cheese off the soggy crust as I was so hungry. The hamburger was cold, the cheese was cold, the fries were cold; I decided to pretend it was my mother’s meat loaf and then it wasn’t quite as bad. We did have a nice bottle of wine at a reasonable price (it would have been smarter to “dine” at the Club and just be done by 8pm when the canapé-serving ends….). I usually had early morning meetings so only once made it to the Club for breakfast. I would say that there is potential to have a really nice breakfast (and they serve from 6:30 to 10:30am which is quite generous) as they have an impressive spread of choices in the buffet, fresh juice, both Asian/Western choices and they have a chef to make a variety of hot dishes. In my one morning of breakfast indulgence (in for a penny, in for several pounds….), I ordered pancakes, an egg lightly turned over, well done bacon, hash browns, fresh orange juice, coffee/skim milk and whole wheat toast). I actually think if I had taken the time to talk to the chef it all would have been okay (but I was in a hurry so just ordered it from the Club staff), but the pancakes arrived so thick and doughy that they were inedible. The eggs were like rubber and hard, the bacon was greasy and not well done, and the hash browns were fine (but then, I like McDonalds hash browns so what does that say about my love for grease…). The toast was made for me by one of the Club’s staff so was fine (and it was toast…not too hard to get right). The Club staff was all actually really professional, kind and efficient). I think I might have just ordered from the Chef on a bad day as the rest of the buffet was quite nice. Overall, my stay at the GM made me once again realize that I should know better and from now on will book my own hotels (which I always have in the past but let this one client decide due to Bangkok traffic). I will not stay at this hotel again, but if you are in the area for business (and just sleep/use the Club/gym/pool for exercise), it’s still a good choice.
Room Tip: Be aware the room windows don't open. Club rooms worth the higher price for Club access.
