“Even if you have low expectations you'll be disappointed!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012 via mobile

Although our first impression was decent enough (arriving at 2am), we were soon disappointed.
We were supposed to get breakfast with our room every day but only got it 1 of 4. But we probably wouldn't have eaten it after the first day anyways. Even though it's served until 11am, there was no food left at 9am. We had to ask them to make more food and brew new coffee and bring out some bread for toast. The hot dishes, when they came out, were less than desirable (even the thai ones!)
Against our better judgement, we booked for another night on our way back through Bangkok, thinking it couldn't be that bad two times. Our reservation was not on file when we arrived even though I had made special arrangements on our way out the time before. We had to wait in the lobby for 2 hours b/c the a/c broke in another room so they sold the one that should have been ours to someone else. Then they wanted to charge us 300 baht more than previously agreed because we didn't have a reservation! They ended up finding our reservation written on a little slip of paper on the front desk and nowhere in their computer system. The manager who took our res originally was conveniently not available.
I could continue but I just want to forget about it so I'll just sum up by saying the safety deposit boxes don't work, they won't fix them, the food is horrible, the service worse and the staff are miserable. The only good thing is the proximity to the skytrain!

“AWFUL PLACE”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I stayed here three times in December / January. Charged for beer we didn't drink. No "welcoming drink on arrival", which is false advertising. Mold in bathrooms. Refrigerator door wouldn't close (health problem for storage of cut watermelon). Manager arrogant and unapologetic. Had to insist--three times!--to get two key cards. But worst of all--locked out of my room on day I was flying back to Sydney. No master key to open the room. "Engineer" not available until 9:00 am. It took THREE HOURS to get back into my room. I could have missed my flight, which would have cost hundreds of dollars. Manager totally indifferent. And the breakfast is truly terrible. DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE!

Room Tip: DEFINITELY check out room beforehand--make sure key card works, air conditioning works, refrigerator...

“DO NOT STAY HERE, terrible hotel - there are so many places in BK to chose from so shop around.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

DO NOT STAY HERE. Even if you think the price is a great deal, it isn't! the hotel is a 1* horror. The reception staff are terrible, not helpful at all and ask you stupid questions - then they said they needed our creditcard for a bond but instead they actually took out the total cost of our room on the card, so even though we said we would pay the bill when we left they took the money on the first day! Do not book tours from the hotel travel agency, they are a total ripoff, go to any other travel agency and you will see that they have much better prices (discovery asia is a good one). The rooms are tiny, dated and filthy, mold in the bathrooms (which are the size of a shoe box), towels were years and years old and a dirty grey colour (even though they clearly used to be white!), toiletries are awful and not replaced (even if you stay 4 nights!). There were old sandwiches in the fridge in our room and some sticky red liquid so clearly they don't clean the fridges out after each guest! You have to pay for everything extra, even for a tea bag in the room! I have never come across this in Asia. The room TV is old with hardly any channels and crackly reception - not worth using at all. The swimming pool in tiny and not maintained and not worth it. The breakfast is awful and if you go around 1 hour after breakfast starts everything needs to be replenished. You only get 1 room key so that you can't leave the A/C on while you are out. Also, if you don't hang the 'room to be serviced' sign on your door then they don't service it! crazy system which I have never come across before, it is so easy to forget to hang these signs up but hotels normally still service your room anyway! The hotel foyer is full of mosquitoes so don't hang out there. Th hotel offers a free tuk tuk service up to the main road but it is not always there when you need it. There are sooo many hotels to choose from in Bangkok, I would shop around and find a better place than Royal Asia Lodge.

“Dumbfounded by all these one-star reviews”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2012

All the reviewers who are panning the Royal Asia Lodge must have been born with a silver spoon in their mouth, because for a three star property this hotel is excellent value and in good repair. Sure it's an older hotel, and the furnishing are a little on the kitsch side, but that's part of the charm of staying at a locally-owned hotel in Asia. If you stay at a US or European owned chain, or a carbon copy of one, it has no local flavour. At least at the Royal Asia Lodge, you can be sure you're not in Kansas anymore.

We found the rooms large and adequately furnished, the Internet reliable, the location very good, and didn't have any problem with the service. If I had to pick a bone, it is that we were staying in a satellite building away from the main reception, and that there was a lot of junk stacked around the entranceway of that building, spoiling its appearance. But that could be easily fixed. Also, one of the air conditioners was noisy. But no sign of the reported roaches!

Room Tip: We stayed in a suite with two large air conditioned double bedrooms, and a living room with attached...
