“Really basic, bare minimum, miserable staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2012 via mobile

I got there and was greeted by members of staff, neither of whom smiled. I had a reservation but they wouldn't look to see if I has one as I had no printed confirmation. So I went to an Internet cafe and paid to print it off. I got there, paid, plus 500B key deposit and checked into the smallest room ever. It did have toilet shower and air con but the bathroom was terrible. The shower was directly above the toilet, which was in the centre of the room rather than on the wall. I checked out the next day.

“Horrible”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

So dirty we slept on top of the bed with t shirts covering the pillows. I couldn't stand on the floor with bare feet and taking a shower took a lot of bravery. The receptionist was a bit rude but the bar staff were nice. On the whole not worth the 300 baht per night, the location is good but you would probably be better off just sleeping on Khao San Road on top of your back pack.

“Get your cheap on!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Smile Inn has a great location right on Soi Rambuttri -- the main walking drag in the tourist ghetto of Khao San Road. If you want to get drunk and watch the human parade and bargain shop for random souvenirs, Rambuttri is the place to be.

And if you want to do it all on the cheap, then consider the Smile Inn. No, it's not pretty. It's an old concrete bunker, with tiny windowless rooms (windows onto the hallway don't count). But they're clean. I think many reviewers think that old stained concrete means a place is dirty. I watched the staff clean my room, and they do a good job. It's just old, stained and run down. So it looks grotty, but that's why it's cheap.

I stayed in a single fan room with a shared bathroom. Tiny, and the bed is saggy with springs that aren't precisely the definition of comfortable. But there was enough room for me and my stuff, and I'm not in Bangkok to see the inside of a hotel room. The shared bathrooms are clean and nice if small -- the geyser worked great for hot water. When I stayed on the ground floor, the bathrooms down there were broken, so I had to go up to the second floor, but even with the additional traffic, they were kept clean by the staff.

The best part of my stay? I booked it online and got single fan shared bathroom with no breakfast included for 300 baht a night. I don't think there's anywhere cheaper in Bangkok. Most midrange rooms are 600 or 700.

So if the point is to keep the party cheap (in which case, you should also go to the 7-Eleven around the corner; buy a Big Gulp of Coke for 24 baht, leaving room at the top for your alcohol; at the checkout ask for a pint of SangSom whiskey for 119 baht; while the cashier is making your change, pour 1/3 or more of the whiskey into your cup -- and voila, you are now a walking party for half the cost of a bucket at a bar!), then you should definitely give Smile Inn a chance.

“worst ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

The Standard Double Private Bathroom Air room was very small and dirty, the staff is unfriendly. I had to ask for towels and was glad that I got two. My Thai girlfriend wanted to stay with me a second night and suddenly the manager ask us to pay 200 extra Baht for her. I know that rule from other guesthouses, but here is not sign at all and for what did I book a double room? She (former he) will loose many customers with that rude behavior.
Stay away from that place if you find a room at another place!

“Really poor but really cheap.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

Pretty crappy place but one of the cheapest in Khao San area.
Stayed there for a few nights in november. Rooms are really poor and for sure not clean.
Shared bathroom's - nice surprise - clean and OK. Front desk staff hmm... I've heard that the worst front desk staff in BKK is in Baan Sabai neighbor hotel, so in Sawasdee Smile Inn it's only bad.
Prices are ok - when you do your reservation via web.
One more thing about this place - if you don't have to, don't stay at Sawasdee Smile Inn!
