“I should have read previous reviews! then I would have avoided the Eugenia”

We have stayed at the Rachamanhka in Chiang Mia and were in love with it, I had assumed that all Relais & Chateaux Hotel properties were up to that level.

I felt that the rooms were on a par with a youth hostel, the hotel is a 3 floor walk-up, a rack on the wall is your closet, the worn floors seemed dirty, there wasn't a chair to sit in unless you were a child. The designer of this hotel was only into form not function, the bath tubs were lovely to look at, but dangerous to shower in and uncomfortable to soak in. Some have called this hotel shabby chic and say it was more shabby that chic. We will never stay in the Eugenia again! It was extremely expensive for what it was.

That said, I will say that the food was good although expensive and the service was delightful.

Room Tip: I don't believe there were any.

“Eugenia is a nightmare”

I am very disappointed at the my 3-night stay at this highly reclaimed hotel. While the look of the hotel is very appealing, I really don't understand why the designer did not even think of making the hotel sound-proof. I had to ask the receptionist to change me into another room at 1:00am as the noise of motorcycles and cars were completely unbearable. So I was moved from Room 303 to Room 302, less than two hours after, dogs' barking woke me again. The hotel is designed without thinking of functunality and practicality, the bed is so high, one needs a ladder to crawl in, the brass bathtub looks nice, but does not work well at all. The taxi driver that the hotel arranged refused to use meter, when I complained to the hotel, the answer is that they have no control over the taxi driver. I just asked the hotel receptionist to arrange a taxi for going to the airport, after waiting for 30 minutes, I was told that they cannot find any taxi less than 1,500 Bhat. Overall, the hotel staff seem nice but can't help much at all. The hotel is grossly over-rated and over-priced for what it can offer. I stayed in Four Seasons, Conrad, Dusit Thani and Shukuthai before, this is by far the worst experience that I have ever had in Bangkok.

Room Tip: My local friend told me that there is a new boutique hotel behind the Four Seasons is the latest add...

“Not so good”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Agree with much of what has been said. This is a unique hotel which seeks to recreate a 1930's colonial feel, and does it quite well. But it's superficial and at the expense of attention to detail. The food and the staff are great, really. The bed is 90cm off the ground which for 67 year-olds with dodgy knees is impossible. Move the furniture around and create a step up.The air conditioning is old and very noisy ( and you need to run it through the night). The shower is a disaster - with temperatures of mid-30's and 85% humidity you need the shower twice a day. It falls off the wall ( even after complaining) and floods the floor. It is at eye height instead of above the head. The shower curtain is a joke. And the whole decor needs a lick of paint. This is NOT a hotel up to the standards we would expect of a Relais & Chateaux Hotel

“Very Nice if your into a touch of the Old World and Independent Hotels”

We stayed in The Eugenia Bangkok for 3 days recently, I have to say first this is not your usual hotel, it is located in Sukamvit Bangkok which in my opinion is the nicest area of Bangkok, mainly embassy type expats and upper class Thais, the Eugenia is a throwback to the colonial glory days. The eugenia is located between two skytrain tracks so quite good and easy to move around.

Its a small hotel and well managed, food is excellent if not a little pricey but staff are very accomodating. Breakfast is pretty good but this place is all about evening food and drinks, the cocktails and wine selection is fantastic, its also small enough to allow you to have a smoke if no-one objects! true old world.

The only downside is that some rooms are a little noisy, the street noise is noticable and for some bizare reason they have these massive AC units that churn away all night in the room, this needs to be addressed otherwise this place would be faultless.

Great location, great food, great library, antiques/furnishings and staff, definately recommend for drinks even if not staying there. I was told by the very professional french GM that the windows were getting changed to double glazing which will sort out the noise, hopefully AC units in the budget too!

Room Tip: not street side

“Excellent hotel, a real Gem”

Excellent hotel, a real find in the busy city.

Very unique compared to the generic international chains, a little like being in a museum where you can touch and use everything!

Very comfortable couple of days luxury after a couple of weeks roughing it!

Highlights; Super comfy 4 poster bed, huge copper bath tub

Minor criticisms; lack of communal space and a fairly pricey bar

Room Tip: Every room is unique, you cant really go wrong
