“An Experience”

We stayed two nights in the summer of 2011 and we were very happy with the size of the room (the bed was massive!!!) and the location of the hotel. It was odd however that there wasn't any windows in the room but the decor was great, it seemed like we were in olden China, especially when we heard a lady outside the room playing an instrument during the day.

The bar was really good and the live band playing was great! The bellmen were really nice and helpful.

The only downer was the fact that we were charged money for accidentally breaking a glass in the room and also we never received our welcome pack. The man at the desk during check out was not too friendly as well.

“Great location”

This is my 2nd time staying in this Yaowarat hotel. It is located in Chinatown, with easy access to everything we need. The street is filled with interesting and traditional Thai-Chinese shops, stores, and restaurants. A lot of street food and street retailers, reasonably priced. Convenience stores like 7-11, banks, travel agents and etc are everywhere. The premise is chic, with a 1930s Shanghai twist. Room is large, and have great shower. The only complains, and perhaps the biggest complains are the bed, which is not very comfortable. The check in counter can be a bit too busy, and the breakfast quality is mediocre. I love the place overall.

After a long journey from London, we were met at the airport by a car arranged by the hotel. We were soon checking in at the hotel, given a cool hand cloth to freshen up with and a welcome drink. We were taken to our room ( a suite ) WOW absolutely stunning ! everything you could wish for including a fridge with beer, water, soft drinks and snacks all free and replaced daily. The whole ambience of the hotel is charming, calm and tranquil. Afternoons are magical, you can sit outside your room drinking China tea listening to a Thai lady playing a traditional instrument by the very large ornamental pool, just sooooooo relaxing. This is not the only music you will enjoy, most evenings there is a live quartet playing light jazz in the Cotton bar, the cocktails are good too! :)
We cannot speak highly enough of Shanghai Mansion, it would have been easy to have stayed inside the hotel but we were in the middle of Chinatown and had to explore, adventures were waiting!
Outside you will be amazed at the sights especially the food stalls that set up every evening along the streets, we liked the seafood stall on the first corner ( turn right from the hotel )

The Canton House opposite the hotel does very tasty Dim Sum at 16 baht per portion !!

For a special evening do try the revolving restuarant on the 25th floor of The Great China Princess Hotel ( turn right 10mins walk )

When you wish to go further, these tips may be useful.

BEWARE do not go in a Tuk Tuk you will be Tucked Up!! they will either charge you way too much or more likely take you to a Tailors, Jewellers, Tour Agency... before you get to the destination you actually wanted to go, not to mention being choked by the traffic fumes !!

ASK the bell boy at the entrance to get a Taxi for you or hail one and check they put the meter on ( it starts with a 35 baht charge )
DO get the hotel to write the name and address of the hotel in Thai, they may understand a little English but not all Taxi drivers can read it, as we found out !

DO NOT get taken in by people who are very friendly and offering to take you on trips, it's MUCH cheaper to let the Hotel sort this.

Shanghai Mansion, we can't wait to return !

Room Tip: Book a suite

“Peaceful city hotel in great location of Chinatown”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Family holiday in Thailand.
Stayed here while in Bangkok.
Great place, peaceful & full of character & charm to escape from crazy BBK.
Right in middle of Chinatown, which is great for food in the evening.
Pretty good access to river taxis, train station, MRT, etc.
Traffic can be pretty chaotic though, so take that into account when planning trips

“Best Hotel I've been in BKK”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

Shanghai Mansion is an awesome hotel stay if you're looking for a calm and relaxing night of rest after a hectic day of shopping.

The front desk service was fast and efficient. Very polite and courteous too. The whole check in and check out process will not take more than 5mins.

Also, standard of room service is closed to perfection. With mini fridge refilled with snacks and beer everyday. The bed was very comfy and huge!

Hotel breakfast buffet was good. And it is interesting to note that the crowd there consists of polite and friendly people. No noisy crying babies and rude asians barging into your queue to spoil your day.

All in all i had a fantastic time at Shanghai Mansion. Would definitely be back!
