After a long journey from London, we were met at the airport by a car arranged by the hotel. We were soon checking in at the hotel, given a cool hand cloth to freshen up with and a welcome drink. We were taken to our room ( a suite ) WOW absolutely stunning ! everything you could wish for including a fridge with beer, water, soft drinks and snacks all free and replaced daily. The whole ambience of the hotel is charming, calm and tranquil. Afternoons are magical, you can sit outside your room drinking China tea listening to a Thai lady playing a traditional instrument by the very large ornamental pool, just sooooooo relaxing. This is not the only music you will enjoy, most evenings there is a live quartet playing light jazz in the Cotton bar, the cocktails are good too! :)
We cannot speak highly enough of Shanghai Mansion, it would have been easy to have stayed inside the hotel but we were in the middle of Chinatown and had to explore, adventures were waiting!
Outside you will be amazed at the sights especially the food stalls that set up every evening along the streets, we liked the seafood stall on the first corner ( turn right from the hotel )
The Canton House opposite the hotel does very tasty Dim Sum at 16 baht per portion !!
For a special evening do try the revolving restuarant on the 25th floor of The Great China Princess Hotel ( turn right 10mins walk )
When you wish to go further, these tips may be useful.
BEWARE do not go in a Tuk Tuk you will be Tucked Up!! they will either charge you way too much or more likely take you to a Tailors, Jewellers, Tour Agency... before you get to the destination you actually wanted to go, not to mention being choked by the traffic fumes !!
ASK the bell boy at the entrance to get a Taxi for you or hail one and check they put the meter on ( it starts with a 35 baht charge )
DO get the hotel to write the name and address of the hotel in Thai, they may understand a little English but not all Taxi drivers can read it, as we found out !
DO NOT get taken in by people who are very friendly and offering to take you on trips, it's MUCH cheaper to let the Hotel sort this.
Shanghai Mansion, we can't wait to return !
Room Tip: Book a suite
