“Great hotel - quiet spot”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

We really liked this hotel. Down the end of Soi 20, nice and quiet, but still easy enough to get around. The rooms were clean, with plenty of space (we had an extra bed in one of our two rooms). The staff were friendly and helpful, and our kids loved the salute from both of the doormen.
The pool is plenty big enough for the capacity of the Hotel, and we enjoyed relaxing there at the end of busy days.
The breakfast was really good - a variety each day, there was plenty of it, and it was kept fresh and replenished.
It was just what we expected for the price - not a 5 star luxury joint, but that's not what you're paying. Great value for money.

“Not what we expected based on the hotel website”

Visited in January 2012. Bathroom was very dated with rusty sink faucet and outdated tub/shower. Shower curtain was moldy. Room was nothing special, fairly tidy but not clean. Thankfully we didn't spend much time there. It is located in a great neighborhood, and approximately a 10 min walk to Asok station for the sky train.

Do not take the front desk's word that in the morning a cab ride to the airport is 30 min, or that if you call 10 min ahead of time they will have a cab for you. I would give yourself an hour and a half to the airport by cab to be safe. We missed our flight to Phuket, but live and learn I guess.

To sum it up, not a horrible hotel but not great. Staff is friendly. Price is a bit high considering all the other newer hotels in the area. I would not stay again.

“Bally’s Studio Suite – Lovely Oasis in Bangkok”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

This place is a hidden gem. Awesome Boutique hotel with a pool & great location. Nestled in around the bend (3rd building) as soi 20 turns left. This soi has some restaurants and massage shops street food stalls and not any loud Go Go bars in your face. Perfect! Really easy to walk to & from the main intersection. (You can use the free hotel tuk tuk if you don’t want to walk. …tip 20Baht.) Only 10 minutes to the main intersection. Turn left to Asoke BTS. I loved walking soi 20 day or night. Safe for female traveler. Lots of street food stalls on this soi.

Very nice big & bright room with big, comfortable bed. In room safe. Quiet A/C which you control. HD TV and lots of English channels. The door key has the room number but not the name of the hotel… which is good. Rooms cleaned daily, hot water for tub/shower combo. (I packed a bath pillow & used it in the tub – loved it!)

There’s a lift. Free Wifi in room. Ask the desk for “Wifi code.” (It’s glued onto selected business cards. You have to ask for code – And they don’t call it a password.) There is also one free PC with descend internet speed in the common area just outside the restaurant. Well worth the stay.

The pool is on the roof. It’s smallish but lovely. The best part is it’s in the sun all day. *This is not a pool for the swimmer who wants to do laps but perfect for a sun lover who wants to bask in the sun & have a quick dip when needed. It’s a peaceful ambience at the pool too. There is also a small gym which you walk through to go to the pool. *They don’t tell you this – Help yourself to a towel available (in the small gym) at the entrance to pool. The pool was never crowded. The most I saw at the pool was 2 other guests.

The hotel breakfast is not that great. I prefer eating at a street stall anyway so not a biggie. If the street stalls scare you there’s also a good choice of small Western & European restaurants on this soi.

Print the phone number & keep it handy for the airport taxi when you arrive as their web site doesn’t have directions in Thai for taxi. When you arrive remember to pick-up a business card from the hotel – it has directions in Thai for taxi on the back of it.

About 45 min to airport – non rush hour traffic. I was a little surprised when the taxi at the airport asked me “how much I want to pay?” I had to say: (“use meter or I will get out. Turn meter on! It starts at 35Baht.”) – so he knew he couldn’t take advantage. All went well. Note: I paid 340 Baht from airport plus 50 Baht airport charge plus 2 tolls on route (40 Baht & 30 Baht.)

This was kind of cool… The driver asked if I needed change. The toll will make change for a Thai taxi driver. (I thought why not seeing he asked me? Don’t do this unless your driver asks.) The driver passed my 1000Baht bill to the toll and passed the change to me. All went well.

NOTE: You can’t see Balley’s until you walk around the bend at the end of soi 20. If walking back to hotel from the direction of soi Asoke after dark – walk along main intersection side walk & follow the main intersection until you see the bright yellow sign “Bei Otta” on the right side .…this is soi 20. Walk to the end of the soi and just around the bend. Viola! Bally’s!

I really liked this area. The hotel is lovely. I’d recommend this place to anyone.

Lots of street food stalls on this soi. Just smile and point to what you want. There’s plastic table and chairs at 1 or 2 of them. These food stalls are used a lot by Thais – this tells you its good food! It’s usually about 25 to 30 Baht depending on what you have. Not all speak English – After you eat ask how much and the reply may not be in English. Just give the person 40 or 50Baht and they will give change for a small bill.

Note* There’s an older Thai man who is a Palm Reader on the main intersection. He sits on a blanket on the sidewalk and there is a sign with a candle that says: Palm Reader. He sets up after and he is a good one (not fake!) You can find him on the main intersection near soi 18. He speaks pretty good English. He has a thick book with pictures and scriptures. He may refer to the book simply to validate what he says to you. He’s experienced and knows that book.

Easy access to the steps leading up to Terminal 21. Walk up the first set of steps to the sky walk that you see. Walk straight ahead to the 2 ATM machine. Walk to the right for the entrance to Terminal 21 Mall. Follow the sign into the mall. Take the opportunity to get photos inside Terminal 21 Mall which has great spots scattered through out for photo opportunities. Second floor has Samurai pillars and perfect for a self photo.

If you want street food like really good Pad Thai - take exit 3 from Asoke BTS to go to the ground. Come down the steps and cross the intersection straight in front of you. Turn left and walk down soi Asoke. Walk straight ahead about 12 to 15 min for bars or Smile Dental Clinic. Thre Pad Thai stall is in front of the dental clinic.

*If you need to go to Yanhee Hospital it is only ½ hr at 8:30am on a Saturday. Takes 1 ½ hr at 1:40pm to return. You will have to pay 1 toll.

…Will definitely stay here again!

I don't know how this hotel gets such high ratings. I suppose its decent for the price if you stay in a deluxe suite in the new building. The other rooms are a bit old but are cheaper. The first one I stayed in smelled a bit like the pillows and mattress was old. The second one had no proper shower, just a low shower coming out of the bath wedge. I was glad I moved to the deluxe in the end. If you book from one of the consolidator websites (agoda/webasiadirect/booking.com) it will be a lot cheaper than Bally's own site (which prices are too high). I was looking for somewhere for a month stay but they couldn't discount the prices more than available on the internet. In the end I just found somewhere up the road with a monthly rate of 60% what Bally's wanted for a newer room with a bigger balcony. The staff are efficient rather than helpful. I won't go back to Ballys unless there is no other option.

Room Tip: Choose a deluxe suite from a booking website. Check the prices. They are different on each site. Som...

“Good location, great in its price bracket”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

Stayed at several other places in the area in this price bracket and none beat Bally's. Modern, clean, comfortable rooms with pleasnt decor, efficiently serviced. Everything works as it should. Staff pleasant and helpful without exception. Location good, 10 mins walk from Sukhumvit. Lots to do on Soi 22 (dont miss the cat bar!). Lobby and facilites great, pool very good for central location. Rooms out front currently noisy cos of construction, ask for something off the front. Cant be beaten for value in the area.

Room Tip: Get something off the front of the building which is noisy currently - staff will help - ask when bo...
