“Not Outstanding But Good Value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

Close to the airport and a lot of local attractions, this hotel was not oustanding, however it did offer welcome peace and quiet and a great nights sleep on my first night in Thailand.

Tired after a long flight over the Pacific and travelling for 22 hours I was tired and ready for a good rest. The taxi ride from Suvarnabhumi airport was short (25 minutes) and inexpensive (400 TB). The hotel was clean and tidy, but nothing outstanding as it was an older establishment. However, the staff were great, and it was close to a lot of nightlife on Sukumvit Road.

I would stay there again as it was good value for money.

“Great value and location”

I have stayed here three times.

This hotel offers very good value. The rooms are spacious and clean. Wi-Fi is strong.
The in-house massage is only slightly more than other places, but you get a no hassel massage that really gets the muscles back in place.

The local street vendors (night markets) have a wide variety of goods, and if you are prepared to bargain, then you will leave with a full suitcase.

The free breakfast is a feast, with a wide variety of Asian and western foods. Fill up here and you can skip lunch. However, if you are in the hotel over lunch then the buffet provides good value as well. I have not eaten dinner here as there are many local restaurants locally- all good value.

The limo service to the airport is worth the extra – but bargain again and you will save.

Room Tip: just ask...you have nothing to lose.

“Good Stay”

I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and upon my arrival I noticed there was a problem with the air con and after reporting it to the reception I was immediately shifted to another room (higher floor) which was kind of them.

Would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: Try the rooms on higher floor as they have better view

“Sukhumvit, Soi Cowboy, shopping...this is the place to stay for all that.”

Overall, excellent stay. Highly recommended. The Tai-Pan Hotel was booked spur of the moment using Agoda at 5 pm, knowing I would arrive there after an AirAsia flight, leading to an arrival at 1 am. The price was right. For two nights there, the total cost was $105.00. I had to admit I was a bit concerned about the “seediness” factor of the hotel, just being a five minute walk (perhaps less) to Soi Cowboy. But I was relieved to not get that vibe at all.

Tip: When telling the cab where you want to go, tell him Soi Cowboy. My cabbie did not know where the Tai-Pan was, and yours might not either. Once you get in the vicinity of Soi Cowboy, you will likely see the signs for the hotel. If not, you are close enough you could walk.

Check-in was straightforward. I took less than 10 minutes from the time I walked into the lobby until I was unzipping my bags in the room.

Rooms are huge, maybe 10 m x 6 m. About double the size of what I have experienced in my other Thailand hotel stays. In the room, there is a complimentary robe with slippers, a great touch after a long, sweaty journey from Chiang Mai. They give you two complimentary bottles of Chang water. Plenty of other goodies in the mini-bar too. Wi-fi is free, had no trouble connecting. Awesome view from the “bay-style” windows, that allow you to be surrounded on three sides by glass. From my comfortable air-conditioned room, I could see the girls on the street touting massages outside their parlors. Right in the middle of Sukhumvit, you can’t get any more central than this.

On the nightstand, there is a “switchboard” that allows you to control all the lights in your room. I had never seen this before, probably the most unique thing about the room.

I did not check out the pool, rec room, or anywhere else, but I would expect it to be fine. If there were any negatives I have, it would be that the breakfast seems a bit overpriced for Thailand (175 baht with discount), the in-house massages are expensive too (about 900 baht), when you could get one as good just a few steps out the front door for about 200 baht. Finally, the décor seemed a bit dated. Would stay there again for sure.

Room Tip: Any would be fine.

“Oasis in the city.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

I spent a very relaxing 2 nights here at the end of my trip. It was a perfect way to finish my vacation. It is very well located with easy access to BTS , shopping and eating. The staff was competent and professional, as well as friendly and helpful. The room was spacious and well appointed and had complimentary wifi. For me, the number 1 reason to go back would be how quiet the rooms are. Although you can look down on busy Asoke road, you can shut your curtains and enjoy one of the quietest rooms in Bangkok. I had nothing but positive experience here and looking forward to returning.
