I just completed a four-day stay at the Conrad Bangkok, the latest of many stays over the last ten years or so. It's always been a great experience.
Bangkok can be a difficult and tiring city for business travelers -- don't get me wrong, it's also charming and exciting, but the heat and humidity, the horrendous traffic, the exhaust fumes on the sidewalks, and the increasingly crowded Skytrain cars and stations can take a lot out of you -- so getting back to the peaceful and efficient Conrad at the end of the day is always a nice change.
I had a Hilton Honors upgrade to the executive floor on this stay. The rooms on this floor are large and comfortable and lavishly appointed, but so, in my experience, are the non-executive rooms. The free breakfast and the abundant wine and hors d'oeuvres in the executive lounge would make it unnecessary ever to pay for a meal, except that this would mean missing one of the best things about Bangkok, its restaurants.
The pool and the gym are also quite nice. The 7th floor gym, adjacent to the pool and spa, is currently undergoing renovation, but the temporary substitute gym on the 3rd floor is more than adequate, and guests can still use the sauna and steam bath in the locker rooms adjacent to the permanent gym.
Travelers who like the Skytrain -- typically far quicker than a Bangkok taxi -- should note that the Conrad is an eight to ten minute walk from the nearest Skytrain station, Ploen Chit. There's a free hotel shuttle during day and early evening hours, but I have never taken it because the next one always seems not to be leaving for another fifteen minutes. A few other excellent hotels in Bangkok, notably the Hyatt Erawan and the Intercontinental, are just a few steps from the Skytrain. But the walk from the Conrad is pleasant enough so long as it's not raining.
The staff at the Conrad is always friendly and most are quite good at what they do, but on this trip I noticed a couple of small problems. The bathroom scale did not work, and when I asked for a replacement they sent an industrial scale (for weighing large packages etc.). I sent that one back but never did get a working bathroom scale. Similarly, I requested the International Herald Tribune but kept getting a local English-language newspaper throughout my four-day stay. (But I did manage to find IHT and the Asian Wall Street Journal in the lounge.) And it seemed to take quite a bit longer than it used to for the waiters in the lounge to bring coffee and tea in the morning, which can be a problem when your next meeting is across town in 45 minutes.
On balance the Conrad is still great. I hope to stay there again soon. By the way, the little rubber elephant in the bathtub and the little silk elephant in the bedroom are yours to keep.
