“Special Treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

Back in the old days we used to do package trips from Hong Kong to other parts of Asia. These invariably put you up in posh hotels. Due to that we stayed here twice when it was the Marriot Riverside and we loved it. This time we stayed one night as a special treat. We don't normally fork out for expensive hotels now we book flights and hotels separately. However, now and again it is worth it.

We got to the hotel from the airport by taking the airport link train to Phraya Thai switching to the sky train - 2 stops to Siam Station, walk across platform to change line. 5 stops to Saphin Taksin. Go to pier and follow sign for hotel shuttles, wait for hotel's free boat. It runs every half hour up till midnight, leaving Saphin Taksin for the hotel at approx quarter to and quarter past the hour. Leaving the hotel for Saphin Taksin on the hour and half past the hour.

If you plan to explore bangkok from the hotel, from saphin Taksin you can board the sky train or take the Chao Phraya River boat to the historical sights.

We paid around £100 for a double room with kingsized bed, balcony, river view, late check out till 3pm next day, 25% off meals and inclusive breakfast buffet.

Our room (room 413) was beautiful. Only minor complaint was the bath was incredibly slippy, put one foot in and you slide right across the bath before you can even put your other one in. Quite dangerous. I have bruises to proove it. The bathroom came with an assortment of lovely toiletries: ginger soap and cardamon soap and beautiful smelling shampoo, hair conditioner and shower gel. Everything was very clean. The bed was very big and very comfy. There was a TV and DVD player.

The balcony was good you could see the river but it would be truer to say it faced the pool. Tea and coffee making facilities were available in the room with a huge selection of different teas. Perfect for me as I love herbal teas. There was an in room safe. Lots of storage space.

The swimming pool at the Anantara is wonderful. It is big and deep. You can even sit at the bar in the pool if you want to. There is also a lovely jacuzzi. the grounds of the hotel are beautiful. In fact the whole hotel is quite stunning. The standard of service is excellent, too. The receptionists, the boat shuttle workers, the bell boys, the towel attendant, the breakfast staff - all friendly and polite.

Of course food and drink are dear here compared to real life Bangkok. The hotel is much more like a retreat than even being in Bangkok. We ate at the pool and drank there during happy hour 4 to 6pm. There was an evening buffet with classical Thai dancing. We had a look at the dancing but did not eat at the buffet.

Breakfast buffet in the morning was fantastic. I thought I would never want to eat again by the end of it and finally a hotel that can keep food hot!! Coffee is served at the table. i had to ask for more. i prefer to just take my own as I like coffee. The freshly squeezed orange juice was heavenly. good selection of bread. thai food and western food available.

For our evening meal on the first night we went to one of the restaurants just outside the hotel on the non-river side. There are many restaurants here where you can eat much cheaper than the hotel, though the one we went to charged 17% extra on the bill just like the hotel does. This is a bit cheeky as this is not common practice in local restaurants just in the hotel, but they rely on you not knowing this or not wanting to make a scene about this. This arcade also had some shops and a Boots chemist. Nowhere to buy beer though. We took the free shuttle to Taksin Saphin and went to 7 eleven to stock up on that.

I would certainly stay here again but use it as a spa retreat rather than a base to explore Bangkok. While you can easily explore Bangkok from it, the hotel is so lovely, you won't want to leave it.

“Excellent facilities in a great position”

The change from Marriott to Anantara has seemed to improve the hotel from a chain to something much more personal. We found the staff to be excellent throughout. From our arrival at an inconvenient 1am where we were met with cool towels and an upgraded room to junior suite all the way through to a relaxed departure with late room checkout and access to the Club Lounge we felt well looked after, appreciated and valued. The hotel is on a large site and the well laid out design gives lots of cooler walkways and spacious public rooms. The pool is set in a lovely garden area.

We took up an offer to add breakfast which also gave us afternoon tea in the Club lounge and free drinks and cocktails from 4.30 to 7.30 pm and some laundry items attended to, well worth the cost. Having mentioned it was our wedding anniversary a bespoke cake arrived in our room with some fresh fruit and flowers and a card from the manager and staff, a lovely touch. The breakfast buffet was excellent with choices from around the world and many items prepared on the spot. The river shuttle is a nice trip in itself and connects easily to the skytrain and therefore central Bangkok.

We did not dine in the hotel but would also recommend the dinner cruise they run from the hotel pier, an interesting way to see Bangkok from the river at night and enjoy a good Thai dinner as well.

As the hotel continues it's update under the new owners I expect it will get even better, we will certainly use it again if in Bangkok

“Good value for 5 star, food expensive”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

The resort location is amazing, however it's on the river, which is lovely and there's a daily free ferry service every 30 mins from the hotel to the central pier in Bangkok.

Hotel rooms are good, not amazing considering it's 5 star. All of the food and drinks are very expensive here, as I guess you expect in a 5 star hotel.

I'd stay here again, although if you want to be close to the action of bangkok, or want to see a lot of the night life, I'd probably avoid the riverside and stay more central in Bangkok.

“Oasis in the middle of bangkok”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Me and my wife stayed at anantara riverside spa & resort 19-26 of january. We booked deluxe premier seaview room and it was worth every penny. We asked to see also normal deluxe room and the different was huge on the favor of premier room. The room was spacious and in spotless condition. All premier rooms are located in the wing wich is on the left side if facing the pool. That wing was at the time still under maintenence and only second, fifth and seventh floor were ready. Even there was construction workers and some hammering going on it did not bother at all.
Whole resort is just amazing. Breakfast is wonderful and only problem is that you have just too many options what to have. Pool area is also something to remember. It´s most likely best pool area in whole Bangkok and the sun will shine from the early morning until late afternoon. There are many great restaurants and they all serve great food with lovely service.
All together I have found a place to stay on my trips to Bangkok and I dont need to search any longer an other hotel in the future... Perfect for me and my wife=)

Room Tip: Premier deluxe rooms are worth every penny!

“great location, still a great hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

I've stayed here several times when it was a Marriott, and was glad to see the quality and loveliness of the property remains with its transfer to Anantara.

This is not a high rise but a sprawling property with lovely grounds. The pool area is great wit plenty of chairs scattered around. I also really enjoy the dock bar area to watch the sun set with all the river activity. I stayed in a lovely deluxe river view room. The balcony was small, but had a table and two chairs and it was a very pleasant place to sit with my morning coffee and watch the river scene. The room was beautiful and the bed very comfortable. I find this hotel location very convenient because of the easy access to the sky train. The river shuttle departs the hotel property every 30 min. and the ride from the hotel to the sky train stop is an enjoyable 15 min. When you get on the river shuttle at the sky train stop to go back to the hotel you are given a cooled towel, which after the Bangkok heat is really refreshing. The river shuttle is a beautiful wooden boat and its fun to ride back and forth and watch the scenery. The sky train connects easily to the metro so you can get anywhere you need with the efficient and cheap public transportation system.

Another thing I enjoy about this hotel is a few steps in front of the hotel is a small shopping mall in front which includes a very good Thai restaurant. The food is great and the prices are a fraction of what the hotel restaurant charges. Other ice cream and fast food options are also there, along with some shops and a pharmacy.

My only complaint with the hotel is the internet. I was told the first hour was free, but its really the first time you connect to wifi up to the first hour is free. I was on 10 min. and then tried getting back on later inthe day but found I had to pay. It was 175 THB for an hour-- very steep! There should at least be free wifi areas somewhere in the hotel, and the internet policy should be clearly explained.

Room Tip: Definitely request a river view room.
