I visited the Citrus Hotel, just off Sukhumvit Road, in April 2012. I paid about US$80 a night, and think it was an excellent value. This is a clean, modern, friendly hotel that goes out of it's way to make guests feel welcome.
Sukhumvit Road is a massive avenue that runs through the center of Bangkok and, according to one source, is 400 km long! Locations on Sukhumvit Road are identified by the cross-street; 1 Sukhumvit is way downtown, "Cowboy" Road with all the bars is 21 Sukhumvit, and the "Dead Artist" road is Sukhumvit 33, to pick a few examples within walking distance. This means the Citrus Hotel is very centrally located. Taxi drivers have no trouble finding the address and taking you there. But enormous traffic jams are common, so using the Skytrain is a better way to get around if that works for you. Although I did not get to use it on this trip, Bangkok also has a superior underground train system, and my colleagues report it is clean, fast and easy to use.
Anyhow, you're going to like this hotel. The arrivals area is on the ground floor, but you immediately jump in the elevator to the lobby on the second floor. There you also will find the bar and the restaurant.
The room itself was just about perfect for the business traveler. The size was adequate, but not over the top. There was a walk-in closet area with luggage rack (yeah!). The bathroom was large, clean, well-appointed and nicely designed; no improvements needed. The bed was great and I slept like a log. And there was a reasonably sized desk with all the electrical equipment easily accessible without having to crawl on the floor -- WONDERFUL!
The lobby restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner, but with so many great restaurants in the area I really can't recommend eating in the hotel except for breakfast. But the breakfast is fine -- custom-cooked eggs, lots of fruit, endless coffee and all sorts of tasty thai food. A great way to start the day.
There's a very nice pool on the top floor of the hotel.
Check out the photos I have attached, and I think you will agree this is just about as good as you can get, at a 1/4 of the price of the Hilton or Hyatt.
There's a lot of street noise in Bangkok; so give up the view and stay on the back of the hotel.
