We took the train from Taipei to Tainan, our first time in the city despite dozens of trips to Taiwan. The city of Tainan made us felt welcome as soon as we arrived: there were free shuttle buses for different parts of the city. The ride to Tayih was a bit over half an hour. There was a stop right across the street from the hotel (return bus was a little farther, a 2-minute walk around the corner). We reserved their family room, a very large room with two queen beds, plus a well-equipped working area. It was less expensive than having to book 2 rooms, even though I had two grown children. And it was nice to stay in one room to watch TV at night. The beds were very comfortable. We were presented with a fruit basket and the famous pineapple cakes at check-in. While there's a bit of distance away from the old quarters, the staff was very helpful in getting us a cab right away. Taxis are not readily available in Tainan as in Taipei. The staff gave us a card to call for cabs. If you are a little further out, like in the An Nan Wetland area, calling the number is the only way to go if you didn't ask the cabdriver of the outbound trip to wait, so we were very thankful that the hotel gave us the number. Breakfast was included with our room rate and was quite good, with a mix of Asian and Western offerings.
