Stayed at Base Camp Resort in Pokhara, Nepal in October 2009 during a tour of North India & Nepal with my fiance. Overall, the hotel is not a bad place to stay, and some of the rooms are great. Many of the service staff were wonderful... but our experience was greatly tainted, and I'm outlining it here to try to be helpful to other travelers.
Because our stop at this hotel was part of a greater tour, our room had been booked in advance by at least two months by the tour company. When we checked in, everything went smoothly until we were brought to our room. For our stay in Pokhara, we really wanted to ensure that we had a decent room, preferably with a view, so we booked one of the nicest rooms available in this hotel - Deluxe, double bed, view of the himalaya... What we were brought to was a closet-sized room at the very back of the hotel with a view of other rooms from one window and and view of a public balcony from the next. The bathroom had a window that adjoined our room to our neighbor's room (via a small corridor), who had a really nasty cough, which we heard from early morning. We were only traveling with our backpacks, so it was pretty disappointing that we hardly even had enough space in the room to place our bags down. The two twin beds in the room were also a bit disappointing, but we could have gotten over that if everything else was on par. Worst of all -- the room had an abundance of moth balls -- beside the bed, beside tables and cabinets, near the bathroom, etc. etc. The smell was disgusting, but more importantly, by morning, we felt sick from the smell.
Before settling into the room, I spoke to the front desk staff about not getting the room we had pre-paid. They simply told me that the hotel was fully booked that day. I had to borrow their phone at front desk to call our tour operator to make them aware of the issue, and it took the tour operator's constant complaints to hotel management over the course of our first day at the hotel for the hotel to agree to move us on the second day.
Once we were moved into the second room (the one we had paid for), everything was fine in the room - and it was a decent place to spend the night. But bear in mind that the difference was stark -- so when people on this site say the "rooms" were fine, they may have had a decent room to begin with. We know from personal experience that not all the rooms are fine (at least in our opinion).
When we were checking out after our second night, I wanted to confirm with the front desk staff that the hotel would be working with our tour operator to refund the difference in room rate for the room we pre-paid vs. the room we received for our first night's stay. Not only did they refuse to refund the difference, they insisted that we pay for the phone call we made to our tour operator to report the issue.
At the end of the day, it certainly wasn't the money that was the issue for us, but we do believe that if you have pre-paid a room, then it should be available to you, otherwise the hotel shouldn't have accepted the money for a room they couldn't provide.... And for this reason, I would not stay here again for lack of trust on their business ethic.
