This is my 6th time visiting Kathmandu but the last time was 25 years ago so I have forgotten what the city was like. A Nepali friend of mine recomended this hotel because of the location and good personality of the owner. I totally agree with these points after staying in this hotel.
I was anxious about finding the pick up van at the airport on arrival but shouldn't have worried. I couldn't see anyone holding my name but someone asked me which hotel I was staying at and he shouted into the crowd "EXCELSIOR!" then the pick up man waved. easy!
I chose a standard twin for a couple of nights then changed to a deluxe double (king size!). the bed rooms are the same size except deluxe room has A/C, fridge, better TV and bath tub. I needed heating as the weather was still pretty cold. The beds were not too hard and not too soft, just right!
There are bars close by (1-2 minutes walk) with excellent live music until late.
The hotel owner was very helpful in making a flight booking for me to Calcutta, shopping around for a good deal. He really is a pleasant, honest man. In addition to this, I would like to commend the cleanliness of the whole hotel, cheerful and very helpful staff, peaceful and well maintained rooftop garden. I had breakfast (small pot of Nepali tea and Tibetan bread) there every morning then enjoyed the sunset view in the late afternoon.
They can store your luggage in a secure place when you go trekking or away for a few days and you can use European and American plugs in the rooms.
