This is a little lengthy, but the gist of it says - Stay away from Hotel Marshyangdi to avoid travel grievances!!!
Hotel Marshyangdi was for us, a 25 minute drive away from the airport and situated at the mouth of Thamel, a busy tourist street good for local crafts and trekking gear. It was planned that our group of 5 stay a night in Marshyangdi at the beginning of our stay in Nepal, and then another 2 extended nights after a trek. Arrangements for this were made 5 months prior to our trip, with PACWEST (Singapore), and them with Himalaya Expeditions (Nepal). We found out in dismay however, upon arrival at the hotel, after half an hour of waiting, that 'over-booking' had occurred and we were told that there were no available rooms for us. Noting that our group had already paid for the trip package in full, this was just absurd to hear - how on earth could a confirmed and paid reservation be jeopardized? The staff of the hotel then suggested to put us up in another hotel further up the road (towards Tridevi Marg), which I had initially thought was a good initiative, until we saw the conditions of the place. It was filled with dust, and was no where on par with Hotel Marshyangdi. It was only after very much insistence on our part that we were allocated 2 rooms at Hotel Marshyangdi that 'freed up', just as planned. This entire episode had us spending 2 hours just trying to check into our rooms. Our rooms were basic, with suspicious stains on the sheets and looked weary in general. We had a window in our room that looks down to the courtyard and it was noise polluted til late. The 'special barbeque dinner', simply put, sucked. To the credit of Marshyangdi staff, they were polite and sympathetic throughout. This however is overshadowed by another unfortunate dealing with the hotel.
Upon our return to Kathmandu from Pokhara, we had taken a domestic flight in and were looking forward to spending a day out in Thamel and Tridevi Marg. To our very disappointment, and dismay again, the hotel was overbooked - once more, even after confirming our reservations at check out just a week before!! This was also bizzare to hear as we were seeing other guests arriving with us checking into their rooms! This time round, it was suggested we put up at 2 other hotels. They were, of course, nothing like the standard of Hotel Marshyangdi. With no other options, having being told that it is the 'peak season' and 'all hotels are booked out', we decided on Hotel Nature over lunch and sent our luggage over, only to find out that Hotel Marshyangdi had decided to give the rooms away to other hotel guests that were in the 'over booked' list! This was absolutely ridiculous to hear, and to add to it, the manager of Hotel Nature simply refused to admit that there were zero rooms left in all 3 hotels that they are able to shuffle guests in, until very much later in the evening. By the time our representative from Himalaya Expeditions received an affirmation on this, our group had already spent 6 hours waiting. This was totally unacceptable and we were furious. Management of the hotels made absolutely no attempt to defuse the fire. Our representative from Himalaya Expeditions then had no choice but to withdraw room payment from Marshyangdi, and found us accommodation outside of Thamel, near Times Square.
This reflects most badly on the hotel, Himalaya Expedition, as well as PACWEST, the tour company we made an engagement with in Singapore. I had checked out reviews on Hotel Marshyangdi before this trip to Nepal, and was grateful for them as I knew to be weary about the conditions of the hotel and rooms. And who knew, it turned out to be a much worse experience than anything else that was written here.
Advice to all who have room bookings with this hotel - please be prepared to get 're-shuffled', especially during the peak season. Our group met with several other disgruntled guests during this incident. There are definitely other B&Bs that are a lot more cost effective, with 100% integrity in management, and absolutely worth the stay. Sorry to say this, but Hotel Marshyangdi just does not make the cut.
Room Tip: Do not take the rooms next to the air well for less noise.
