I booked the Kathmandu Guesthouse for three nights, one when I landed in Nepal and then again when I returned from a trip to Tibet. Both times the hotel kindly offered to pick me up from the airport gratis (be sure to email ahead). Unfortunately, like other travelers I had trouble with the airport shuttle the second time, but when I called the hotel the manager told me to take a cab and he would split the bill (ultimately it cost me 250 rupee or $4 USD). The hotel is actually quite beautiful - a little oasis from the chaos of Thamel. The garden is beautiful, the rooms are basic but clean, and the restaurant is comfortable and tasty. My only real criticism is the price. While in all Western cities and most tourist-driven Eastern cities (think Bangkok) a $40 USD/night hotel room would be a steal, but in Thamel most 3 star rooms sell for under $20 USD, some even between $5-$10 (My friend stayed in Hotel Eco 2000 with rave reviews). The restaurant is also very expensive. Lunch or dinner could be $5-$10 USD a meal, while the neighboring restaurants and hotels would be half. Coffee was $3USD...I felt right back in NYC, which is not exactly why I travel. Still, when I return to KTM I will definitely consider returning to the Kathmandu Guesthouse. I think it's worth the price to stay for at least one night...More
