I attempted to book a room at this hotel for one night this past November, as myself and my boyfriend wanted a night in a warmer place than our flat. A the time, both of us were working in Kathmandu (myself at an NGO and my boyfriend in a Ktm hospital as a doctor).
I was informed when I phoned the Kathmandu Guest House about reservations that there was one room left for 50$ a night. I said that was fine, although I knew it was pricey, all the other places I had already called were full.
I was about to book, but then mentioned that my boyfriend was Nepali. The hotel staff member replied "we do not allow Nepali guests here". I was in disbelief. I explained that he was a doctor (not that it should matter?) and when it made no difference I asked just to clarify: "So, because I am a foreigner and white, I am allowed to stay there, but he can't, because he is Nepalese?" and the staff member replied "Yes ma'am". As I began to laugh in my appalled disbelief and disgust, he hung up the phone.
I have read other similar reviews about this hotel. I cannot believe this is acceptable and allowed. I should have made a complaint to the National Human Rights Commission of Nepal (or a similar institution), but it was one of my last days in Kathmandu. I plan to do so upon my return
I would like to add a statement from another review of this hotel that I recently read "... unfortunately we don’t recommend this guest house to anyone who believes in certain principles… we hope all" - Such as equality for all, regardless of ethnic background or skin colour! Please consider this when you are planning on/going to/are already in Kathmandu, and are contemplating staying at this hotel.
