“Loads of character and charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

A converted royal Nepalese palace, the hotel has a distinctive style. We stayed on two separate occasions for 5 days each time and loved the hotel. Both rooms we had were very clean, comfortable and quiet. They were well appointed with TV, tea and coffee making, fridge, safe etc. The bathroom in our first room had quite a damp smell but our second room was fine. The staff throughout the hotel were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food in the restaurant is good. Wifi is available in the rooms but it's not free. Nepal has constant power cuts but the hotel has it's own generator so this is not a problem. We were there in mid-winter and the hotel was lovely and warm. It's about a 10/15 minute walk from the main tourist area, Thamel, but there are plenty of cheap rickshaws and taxi's directly outside if you don't feel like walking. There's an ATM and good massage place across the road and a well-stocked supermarket nearby. It's good value for money and I would certainly stay at the Shanker again.

“Shanker: we like to come back again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Hotel Shanker is a very nice hotel we stayed! Starting from check-in, we recognized that we made a good choice. The people working in the hotel are all very polite. They stopped by to greet you no matter what they were doing at the time and eager to offer the help. The people working in the restaurant is very efficient and they paid much attention on what you want and came up quickly. It is an old building but it has been well maintained. It gave very interesting impression with starting 4th floor after a few steps from the lobby level. We know which floor we were going up to the room but when we came out, we were confused which floor we should go. It brought us fun to enjoy the structure in this old palace hotel. The area of location is very nice, clean and easy to find taxi even in very early morning (5:30 a.m.) when we went to temples for shooting the morning photos. Though we stayed in Shanker for only one night but it impressed all of us and we like to come back again.

Dear Valued Guest

A great many tourists from the Chinese market are loving the Shanker. We also have a brand new Chef and kitchen team, and we are looking at the results through your reviews.

Maintaining a Royal Palace is challenging, and we are happy that we have lived up to your expectations.

Please visit us again.

With Warm Regards,
Pratik S.

“A little funky but nice”

The staff was excellent, the hotel very clean and the room amenities good. The hallways and the way to the rooms was a little funky.

It's located centrally near a nice shopping area and some restaurants. I would definitely stay there again.

Dear Guest

We apologize for the extreme inconvenience caused to you during our stay.

We are located right at the heart of the city with 100% generator back up. It so happened that there was complete load shedding in the city then which is why you felt that there was "no life" around the hotel.

Further, checking your reservation status, we found out that you had not confirmed your Airport Pick Up service although you had given your flight details. Our representative was there at the airport and they quickly arranged a local prepaid taxi for your airport hotel transit. Had you confirmed earlier we would have sent our hotel taxi.

Again, very sorry for the inconvenience caused. This will happen in the future.

Warm Regards,
Pratik S.

“Best accommodation but worst service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Me and my family have been to Nepal to visit Pasupati Nath temple and we chose Shanker Hotel for our stay. We were on a package for Indian nationals for 3 nights and 4 days. After going through various hotels on Trip advisor, we finally took chance to stay in Shanker Hotel. Everything was ok while our stay but we didn't like much because of so much commission taken on every service given by tour operators and reception staff. For example: We booked Everest Experience for 6000 INR per person with hotel tour service whereas original rate is 5200 INR per person including airport taxes and transfers. Whereas we were charged 6000 INR as I said previously including transfers and taxes. Same was the case for room service, there is charge on every thing you order (tea sachets, sugar etc.) and food is costly also. No style and options of breakfast. cold stuff lying for breakfast and staff is also lazy and back biting in Nepali language whenever a customer is around. Always searching for tips and money wherever possible. Overall, we didn't like our stay there but its good for people who are not interested in room service and people around.

Room Tip: no matter whichever room you choose, the whole hotel is great in looks but very quiet and scary.

Dear Valued Guest

We are glad that you liked our well appointed accommodations.

The travel desk is outsourced to Natraj Travels (a leading travel agency of Kathmandu). They handle all travel arrangements for the guests. I think INR 5200 was the airline rate, and since you booked through the travel desk, they added their mark up for their service charges. This is the standard case in most hotels worldwide.

Next time I would suggest you directly book at airline websites for airline ticketing (mountain flights) to bypass middlemen commission. Please feel free to contact me anytime for such issues at sales@shankerhotel.com.np.

With Warm Regards,
Pratik S.
