A converted royal Nepalese palace, the hotel has a distinctive style. We stayed on two separate occasions for 5 days each time and loved the hotel. Both rooms we had were very clean, comfortable and quiet. They were well appointed with TV, tea and coffee making, fridge, safe etc. The bathroom in our first room had quite a damp smell but our second room was fine. The staff throughout the hotel were very friendly, helpful and attentive. The food in the restaurant is good. Wifi is available in the rooms but it's not free. Nepal has constant power cuts but the hotel has it's own generator so this is not a problem. We were there in mid-winter and the hotel was lovely and warm. It's about a 10/15 minute walk from the main tourist area, Thamel, but there are plenty of cheap rickshaws and taxi's directly outside if you don't feel like walking. There's an ATM and good massage place across the road and a well-stocked supermarket nearby. It's good value for money and I would certainly stay at the Shanker again.
