“Strange staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 December 2011

This was the first place we stayed in Nepal. The room was decent size and the water was hot (after running for a while), plus there was wifi in the room (all big bonuses in Kathmandu). The room, however, was run down and shabby (and the bathroom was full of little bugs).

After making a reservation by phone, the hotel staff asked US what our room rate was, which seemed odd. The next morning when we asked about the free breakfast (as advertised on their website) we were told our room rate was too low to qualify. After protesting, we were given the breakfast, but had to renegotiate the whole thing the following morning. Staff were pushy about having them book things for us, and when we did finally ask them to book bus tickets for us the price originally quoted went up inexplicably when it was time to pay. Our room rate also went up (taxes), there was a fee to use a credit card, and the front desk staff asked us explicitly for a tip (which we reluctantly paid as they were holding our bags for us while we trekked). Overall a strange place--not sure why so many people give it a good review.

“Good Value”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We stayed at the Norling for 3 nights before our trek. The staff was very helpful and looked after us. The location was excellent for someone wanting to stay in the Thamel area. The room was basic and could of been a little cleaner. However, for the price we would recomend it for someone on a budget.

Room Tip: The rooms in the back are quieter.

“Not a good choice”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011

A group of 12 of us had been booked in here at the start and end of our trek. Greta location but what a dump. You can get much better at the same price in the same area.

Non of our group stayed there on the way back!

“Great Trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

It was a great trip, and the hotel was a big part of that. The staff were very kind, and accommodating. The room was small, but decent. We traveled with a group of 12 and it was everything we needed. It was in busy heart of Thamel, and great for shopping. It was all in all a great experience.

“Noisy, dirty and bizzare service!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

Oh dear. What an interesting experience it was staying here before and after our trek in the LangTang Valley. On our first night the three of us shared a tiny room right at the front of the hotel which was incredibly noisy (to be expected to a certain extent in Kathmandu!) but made worse by the building work that strated at 6am the following morning. The bathroom was filthy but the shower was hot and powerful. We then moved to rooms towards the back of the building which were much nicer. However, the service was so odd it was hilarious!

Pros...
- Good location
- Cheap
- Free internet access (though very slow)

Cons...
- Small and dirty rooms
- Dead cockroaches on the stairs
- Prison style bathrooms
- Restaurant food awful and also dirty
- No cleaning carried our during our stay (four nights post trek, two nights before)
- Bathroom flood (due to drains) was blamed on us because our hair had blocked the drains even though there was a drain cover and absolutely no hair!
- Strange owner who paced the dining room and even followed us up to the roof, obviously to check we were behaving ourselves
- Unspeakable toilet full of previous owners erm, mess in our room

To be honest, it was so bad it became funny. I would not recommend Norling Guest House, or ever stay there again!
