“A reasonable hotel, with a lovely pool.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2012

The Umobano was a pleasant hotel, which obviously served a mix of business and tourist guests. I ended up with a suite to my suprise, which was very reasonable in size. I suspect even an ordinary room would be sufficient in size for most people's tastes.

The rooms did not have air conditioning, but did have a fan, and mosquito screens over part of the balcony windows. I found the room a reasonably pleasant temperature during the night, and didn't miss the aircon, but other people might find it a little stuffy. The night time temperature in Kigali drops to around 20 degrees, and is not as hot as during the day. Mosquite nets are also provided over the beds.

I would suggest if you have a choice book a room with a pool view, as this will also give a view out over the valley (and less chance of disturbance from any noise on the main road).

The pool was a good size, and looked very clean. As the hotel does cater to tourists, expect children at the poolside (swimming lessons were being given on the Saturday morning). There is a good sized gym, which is busy after work, and single sex steam room and saunas. There are also a couple of tennis courts.

The service was slow in the bar / restaurant, but once you made a request it was eventually dealt with. At night the bar was frequented by a number of single young ladies who were very prettily dressed, and gave the appearance of being willing to exchange favours for cash!!

The TV only played 3 out of the 20 odd channels that were listed. This didn't bother me, as I hardly watch TV, but if you like to watch TV while abroad, then keep this in mind.

Room Tip: I would suggest if you have a choice book a room with a pool view, as this will also give a view out...

“in dire need of renovation but customer service has improved greatly!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I've stayed in this hotel once a year (for about 2 weeks on average) for the past 4 years so I speak from experience when I say I was pleasantly surprised during this latest visit. The rooms and furnishings still need major upgrading as do the bathrooms. They also need to put in airconditioning in the rooms instead of a noisy fan! However, there have been significant improvements - the bed is large and comfortable and the bed linens and towels are of better quality overall. The biggest change has been in customer service - overall, everyone is very friendlly and responsive to customer needs - I needed a few things fixed and this happened very quickly. The best thing about the hotel are the amenities - beautiful gardenand pool where breakfast is served, clay tennis courts and a decent gym. After a hard day of business meetings, it's very pleasant to relax in the garden and have a drink. I agree with other reviewers that the overall value for money is lacking but I noticed that a lot of locals and other tourists spend time out by the pool and gardens every weekend so if nothing else, it's worth a visit to just hang out and enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Room Tip: The rooms over the pool have a good view but be warned - that's where weekend music, weekends et...

“Tired hotel, but good sports ammenities”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2011

The hotel is called the Umubano, but is also known as the Laico and Novotel. The hotel is a little tired as the former manager did not renovate as promised. It has a nice pool, tennis courts and a gym. The food is average for Kigali. The bed is large, but the rooms need renovating. A nice view from the rooms. Free WiFi. Overall, a decent hotel to stay in if you can get it at a good price.

“Average 3-4 star business/family hotel”

I stayed for a week at this hotel. It presents itself as a 4 star hotel so I was surprised to find my room lacked airconditioning and the furniture was reasonably worn. Given the price paid it was poor value. The pool, gardens, restaurant and tennis court are very good which made up for the room. Next time I will try different hotel in a similar price range.

“Great place, will stay again.”

I stayed here for 5 nights recently. O.k they forgot to pick me up from the airport but they credited me back for the fare so no problems. I stayed in a higher floor so no noise problems. The staff are super friendly and I would say as with rest of Rwanda with a very chilled attitude so expect slower but friendly service. Did not eat the food other than breakfast which was great. The hotel is a little on the old side but clean rooms with balcony. My room overlooked the pool with the beautiful view of Kigali. Overall I had a great stay. Internet in the room worked perfectly. There is a french bakery downstairs that is popular and great for all yummy cakes and breads.

Room Tip: ask for higher floor
