My partner and I stayed at the Best Western in St Denis for 2 nights as part of a stop-over on our way to Madagascar. We had 1 full day to spend exploring St Denis. For such a purpose, this hotel is okay. Its location is literally on the edge of the inner city. It takes an honest 10 minutes walk to get to the city centre, and it has several restaurants very close by. It is situated right at Reunion's big highway that circles around the whole island, but usually around St Denis, this means a long traffic jam, which brings a lot of noise and pollution. There are no beaches on this side of the island, so you won't be able to go for a dip in the sea.
Getting from the airport to the hotel costs around 25 Euros.
The positive things about this hotel:
- Staff at the reception speaks good English and is happy to help arrange taxi pick-ups
- Very easy access to the city on foot
- Several restaurants close by
- Mediocre rooms, no frills but also not bad
The negative things about this hotel:
- corridors quite old and dingy, with a strong smell of cigarette smoke
- Location very noisy, don't be fooled by the close vicinity to the ocean, there is no swimming or beach
In total, we were a little underwhelmed, after the hotel had boasted quite a few things on their web site. It is simply a stock standard hotel that is probably outdated by about 10 years or so, and definitely needs new lifts and carpets.
