I stayed for 6 days on a business trip. Check in was by far the worst part of the stay. It took 35 minutes for my colleague who arrived with me; 45 minutes for me - I had the privilege of checking in via the special Hilton Honors program desk. Just to be clear, there was no crowd checking in. Staff take 15 - 20 minutes to check each person in. Check-in staff give no signs of having any information from your booking available to them when they start checking you in. Each person's check in process appears to involve 1-3 phone calls. It is a mystery who they are calling.
When I gave my membership# (the second time),the check in person noted that I was entitled to a bottle of wine upon arrival. "We'll send it right up". I mentioned that I don't drink alcohol. "Okay, we'll send some water" (NB: this is quite valuable as they provide no free water bottles in the room - and a large bottle of water costs $10 bucks). Neither the unwanted wine, or the much desired water ever arrived.
Evidently this is the best hotel in Abuja, and they use their power as the monopolist at the top of the market to charge exorbitant prices for absolutely everything. My colleague said it best: you don't mind paying $3 bucks for peanuts when you fly econo-air on a $50 ticket. But, you mind like hell when you pay for a first class ticket.
The good:
beds are comfortable
walls and windows are reasonably thick - you have a good shot of a decent night's sleep
security is tight
decent hair dryer - women will appreciate being able to blow dry their hair properly
rooms are reasonably sized
The bad:
check in!
the aforementioned charges
internet access - the connection in the rooms is wired only (and, no surprise, the fees are high). There is wifi in the piano bar and some of the restaurants, but they charge $20 per hour and that is on top of the fee you are paying to use the wired connection in your room.
All in all, I recommend staying here, as there is no other option at this level. I hope that another decent hotel chain will make an investment in Abuja and get this hotel to "up its game."
