This is the second time I've stayed at the Cardoso on the way up to Inhambane. My first visit was 2 years ago, when we had a room looking onto the parking lot, which wasn't fantastic, but otherwise the hotel and staff were all very pleasant, which is what prompted me to book at the Cardoso again.
This time was a little different. After waiting for rooms to become available as we'd arrived before 2pm, we were allocated 2 lovely sea facing rooms with balconies, which were very nice and well appointed.
While we were waiting, we went for a couple of drinks at the pool, and a swim. A big irritation was being told after a swim that there were no dry towels available at the swimming pool, so we were welcome to walk - wet - through the hotel up to the 3rd floor, to fetch our room towels, or the staff could fetch them for us. Surely they could have found 2 towels in a hotel? They said sorry and just gave up - we had to share a towel to dry ourselves! The drinks bill was also astronomical - much more expensive than a Johannesburg hotel. I also got the overall impression that the staff were all a little tired, and were more interested in going on leave after the December rush than being at work. (While checking in there was an irate customer asking for the manager, so I think we weren't the only guests that thought things weren't 100%!)
I was told by somebody in Mozambique that what has happened is that 2 "0"'s were taken off the Metacal a while ago, and some people haven't adjusted their prices accordingly, which is why it is now so expensive. I'm not sure how true this is, but I was surprised at the cost of things. Prices at the restaurant were also astronomical, so we ate out.
Free wi-fi was a bonus, but was so slow that it was an exercise in frustration rather than a service.
The lady at reception was the exception and was professional and courteous, unfortunately I can't remember her name.
I'll shop around next time for hotel options before booking here again. Maputo hotels need to compare themselves to other hotels in other cities as they are overpricing themselves in my opinion.
Room Tip: Ask for a sea facing room.

Dear CathyB
I am really glad to hear that on your most recent visit you were generally very pleased with the hotel. Having said that I can understand how frustrating it must have been to not be offered effective assistance at the pool and apologize for that. We have already instituted measures to ensure this does not re-occur.
I can also understand that we , and many of our competitors , are regarded as expensive. There are many reasons for this but one of the most important is the fact that we , as most of our competitors , are forced to import virtually all our operational requirements here including foodstuffs. This factor alone makes running an operation this size considerably more expensive that in South Africa. I hope that goes some way to explain the expensive perception.
Once again thank you for your comments
