“Very pleasant surprise”

For a city that has limited resources, this hotel really surpassed my expectations. The staff were amazing and no demand was too much for them.
Seems like they have recently had a refurbishment as the rooms are modern, bright and clean, and the whole reception area looks a lot better than it does in the photos.

I would highly recomend this hotel when visiting Lesotho.

“Best of Maseru”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

Stayed at the Lesotho Sun for 10 days in January 2012. The breakfast buffet (typically included in the room charge) was terrific and is hands down the best place to eat in the morning. The hotel is situated high on a hillside will a great view of the city and surrounding countryside. From most rooms it is easy to see the border between Lesotho and Maseru. Internet access is wired in the room and always operated as expected. Don't expect complimentary internet however, as the hotel charges 300 rand (about $40) for 1 gig of usage.

Service was always offered with a smile, and although the staff never went out of their way to be helpful they were still competent and friendly. Rooms are nice and well equipped with TV, separate tub and shower, hair dryer, safe, and mini-fridge (upon request). Room service was good, and the selection was acceptable. One night we ordered two full plates of frech fries at a cost of approx $5, so that was a cheap dinner.

The primary and nicest mall in Maseru is called Pioneer Mall and it is technically within walking distance (about 20 minutes) to the Lesotho Sun. Walking down the hill is much easier then walking back up, so a taxi may be the best option (approx $5 each way with tip).

My 2 year old sun enjoyed the playground, which is equipped with swings, slides, and an assortment of things to climb on. The property does have a pool, but the water looked a little murky to me so I didn't get in. The pool area does have a bar that is open during the day. There is also an extensive workout room that was never crowded.

The property feels very safe and secluded. There are multiple gated checkpoints for entry by car and the land itself is completely surrounded with a 6' fence. There is an Avis car rental office on site for those wanting to take day trips. There is also a tour provider onsite that can arrange various tours throughout the country. There is no business center, so don't expect to print or copy anything while at the hotel (this can be done at Pioneer Mall however).

“The poshed place to stay in Lesotho”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

The re-fit at the Lesotho Sun was worth the wait. The new hotel decor is great and gives the Lesotho Sun a great mix of african chic and western style. The new restaurants are good though we had to wait ages to get served at the chinese restaurant which has replaced the lehaha grill.

The rooms are the best in Lesotho, good quality linen and comfortable beds. If you want luxury at a price this is the place to stay. I have visited Lesotho on many occasions, staying at both the Lesotho and Maseru Sun and while the pool and gardens are much nicer at the Maseru Sun, the views and rooms are better at the Lesotho Sun.

“Highly recommended (as there is no other decent place to stay in Maseru)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2012

The hotel is reasonably good. No use complaining as there is only one other hotel in town (also a Sun group hotel). But I have no complaints about the quality of the rooms.
The service was always very, very friendly (maybe even a bit too friendly sometimes!). I have no complaints about the service. The staff do their best and want to help!
I enjoyed the breakfasts there - good quality and variety.
The buffet at lunchtime is GREAT. Highly recommended if one is a meat lover. The lamb dishes are always good quality, and a really good variety of dishes. I was never disappointed.
The chinese restaurant quality varies. Generally, the food was second rate. One evening I ate there with Chinese colleague and senior government official, and the food was very, very good. BUT, we had to wait 45 minutes for the food, and then it arrived all at once, including the pre-dinner table snacks! WTF!?!?
I reserve my real complaint for the Internet service. One has to buy expensive pre-paid download volume based coupons, and many denominations not available. Very inconvenient if needing to download documents of unknown sizes from business colleagues. On the last day, when I only needed perhaps 5 minutes of Internet access to check some airline bookings, I had to buy the most expensive coupon because the staff did not have any cheaper ones available.
Also be warned, a casino is attached to the hotel, so a lot of activity at times, and plenty of working girls. But they do not pester you and only chat if you talk to them first. I think that they are kept under strict control by the hotel.
The tourist offices in Maseru are very poor,. I asked for free brochures there but the only free things offered to me (by giggling ladies in their 50s) were packets of condoms!
Oh! One other complaint, it is impossible to eat traditional foods in the city. There is one resort about 45 minutes drive from the city that offers traditional foods (buffet lunch) a couple of days during the week. But the food was not that great. I do not recommend the lengthy drive.
The International airport is interesting. I am not certain, but I think that there are only 2 flights per day to Johannesburg. Not a major international airport.

Room Tip: I think that the city view rooms are more enjoyable

“Improved but still too expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Internet service improved since late 2011, although pricey. Now wireless availability throughout most of hotel. Free internet access in lobby not available anymore. Password access with prepaid vouchers -- Higher capacity vouchers sometimes sold out, so unit cost even higher. Rooms on the city side have best view but tend to be noisy. Occasional parties on the swimming pool patio with loud music and heavy beat. Blaring music from the city to late at night disturbing. Request room quiter room on the mountain side. Regular buffet restaurant for for breakfast and dinner good and better than a la carte, when available. The Chinese restaurant on site has generally poor quality food and service. Hotel staff seems to be somewhat better trained recently but also shows high turnover with trainees that are not very knowlegable or helpful. Overall, hotel too costly for what it offers.

Room Tip: Quiter rooms mountain side, better views city side
