“a cozy gem in Asmara center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 December 2011

Albergo Italia (now named also Keren Hotel) is a true gem in Asmara center. It has been completely restored in 2009. The whole hotel is charming and fascinating and all covered by luxurious marbles. The rooms are refurbished with style and are absolutely clean. The hotel bar is also one of the best places for "aperitivo" in the city. It is in the center of the city, just steps from Harnet avenue (main street). The breakfast is not huge (no buffet, by voice orders) but always pleasant with offer of pure (and no water added) orange juice, toasted bread, jams and a tasty omelette. The staff is nice and attentive. Sometimes it could happen a lack of hot water (not depending by the hotel), but usually when the problem is communicated to reception, in a few minute it is solved. I think it is the best choice in Asmara if you are looking for a old fashioned accomodation without give up fort the confiort and position.

“A historically classic hotel which is unique in its own way!”

It certainly one of the best hotels you can find in Asmara city. The rooms are good, clean and the service is better than anywhere else in the city. The only drawback is the lobby which is too packed for someone that prefers privacy.

“Best in Asmara... ?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2010

In fact it is the best in Asmara, but this is an easy take! The lobby / reception is abit kitch and overdecorated while rooms are the opposite. The restaurant is overpriced and the quality of food is a rollercoaster.

“What a disappointment”

The hotel looks nice enough, apart from the gloomy reception, and the rooms are very pleasant. However, hot water is erratic at best and the service at breakfast is truly awful.
Confirmed bookings are not worth the paper they're written on. You can be sent to another hotel, as we were half way through the stay, because of over-booking. Just avoid this place.

“Government delegations take precedence”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2008

The Albergo Italia is a clean and elegant little hotel in the centre of Asmara. Unfortunately however there is now no guarantee that reservations will be honoured.

A group of 10 of us were booked in for a week in autumn 2008. Unfortunately when we returned to the hotel on the third night, we were told we would have to move out after dinner to the lower standard Savanna Hotel. The manager told us he had no choice as he had been informed by government officials that our rooms were required by a visiting Chinese delegation.

The recent closure of the InterContinental Hotel has left Asmara rather short of quality hotel accommodation. It is likely therefore that future tourists will be shifted out at short notice to make room for government guests.

The Savanna is a comfortable enough hotel but is less conveniently situated and has no air conditioning.

Neither the Albergo Italia nor the Savanna are suitable for disabled people as there are no lifts. The marble stairs at the Albergo are also rather slippery.
