“Minimal service in the worst sense of the word...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2011

I asked my client to book me in this hotel for two reasons - it is situated in the Grand Palm grounds & I wanted to use the gym there (the gym was tiny and overcrowded with people and equipment to the point of making it useless) and I like(d) to eat at the Beef Baron at the Grand Palm (not as good as it used to be). So that leaves a neat modern building with VERY small rooms - literally nowhere to put a suitcase down except the floor or your bed. (Why? this is Gaborone not Paris!). The worst part is the service. Check in took about 45 minutes- one well intentioned poor guy working his way through a laborious check in procedure. Check out was almost as bad. All requests to attend to my non-functioning safe were ignored (3 of them over 3 days, then I gave up.) Asking for an espresso with breakfast meant having it arrive just as I was leaving, after about 30 minutes wait. There is clearly no management care here, in contrast to the very pleasant Metcourt at Johannesburg airport. Finally the hotel is only 4km's from the city centre, but on a HIGHLY congested road, so if you are working in central Gaborone & stay here add 45 minutes journey time each way. Just not worth it....

“Premises nice, hotel only so-so”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2010

The Metcourt is relatively new and I think I stayed there shortly after it had opened. It was designed for the business traveler and has less to offer than its neighboring Walmont sister hotel. And by less, I mean a lot less. The only real edge this place has over the Walmont is that the breakfast is cheaper.
The elevators are slow, the service so-so, the internet not so great, no room service, no restaurant on site (aside from breakfast) and it's not that much cheaper than the Walmont.
Oh, did I mention the rooms are smaller?
I will admit that the rooms at the Metcourt look nicer than the Walmont (they have a more modern feel to them), but I'd prefer space. Also, there are no safes or refrigerators in the room.
If you want dinner, to work out, take out cash, buy a newspaper or swim, you have to go over to the Walmont. Granted, it's really not that far at all, but at the end of a long work day when you all you want to do is have a quick bite to eat and go to bed, the idea of going out and finding food isn't very appealing to me at least.
For the money you're going to spend, stay at the nicer, more convenient, better equipped Walmont.

“Staying at the Metcourt Inn update Nov/December”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2009

The Metcourt Inn is on the Grand Palm site and it shares the plush grounds with the more upmarket Walmont Ambassador Hotel.

There are now phones in all rooms and no payphones at all in the hotel. Finding what rate you will be charged for their use is however not as easy or clear cut as it should be. That said, my advice to anyone going to Botswana would be to either bring an old mobile/cell and get a sim or buy a cheap phone here. No one can quite understand why there is reluctance on the part of the tourist to use their home registered phone. Roaming charges appear an alien concept as is planning ahead!

Sadly wireless internet at the hotel is costly which seems a shame as I can’t believe that many use it and it’s obviously running 24/7.

The restaurants on the Grand Palm site are OK but they are a tad more expensive than can be found at the Malls like Riverwalk. The best is by the pool but it shuts too early; expect to see a troop of monkeys playing on the green around the pool if you catch it. The nearby Chinese Restaurant (out of the grounds, hang a left and across the petrol station forecourt) that you can walk to has the ambience of a large shed from the Bladerunner set and it’s surrounded by drunks from a small sports bar which has all the charm of a train wreck - Number 1 Detective Agency not!! So you really have to spend about 60 Pula a night on taxis to get to dinner and back. The main disadvantage of the hotel being its location.

Service can be slow but it’s generally good-natured though not always efficient. The previously mrentioned towel problem still exists - you can be waiting for your towels to be returned at 6.00 pm.

“Good value, small rooms”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2009

The Metcourt Inn, the Walmont Ambassador hotel, the Grand Palm resort as well as the casino and the Gaborone International Convention Centre are one complex and share a very spacious garden. All restaurants and bars are located at the Walmont Ambassador hotel. The Metcourt serves only breakfast with a sufficient selection of food and fruits. The staff at the reception is very friendly and helpful, the same applies to the waiters/waitresses at breakfast, no complaints at all. The cleaning staff could be more friendly, rooms are cleaned very late and towels are delivered even later probably because they do not have enough towels and beware the Metcourt is a very popular hotel, always fully booked.
The rooms are small, no closet, only a rack with 6 hangers, no refrigerator either! Wi-fi exists but is costly, and one of my colleagues who tried it called it very erratic and slow, you pay for the full time but it might be down some of the time.
The gym located at Walmont Ambassador can be used but you have to pay a fee of 3 Euro per day. And beware there are no towels at the gym you have to bring the towel from your room. The same applies for the lockers, bring your own pad lock. TIn the gym there is plenty of equipment but it feels very crowded even with few people there. The pool is at the Grand Palm resort, there is a nice outside bar near the pool.
Not far from the entrance to the complex there is a Chinese restaurant and a fairly good equipped convenience store.
All in all I recommend the Metcourt and certainly will come back.
