“Convenient, friendly, mainly works”

I've enjoyed my short stay here. The staff are friendly. It's good that the restaurant isn't bad because there isn't much of an alternative choice within walking distance. The steak I had this evening was very good.

I'd recommend against the traditional food, though. I'm very fond of tongue, and I enjoyed the traditional Braised Beef Tongue. However, I have felt a tiny bit queasy today. I have a cast-iron stomach, so I know that, if I feel a little bit queasy, most people will have had to take the day off.

Room Tip: What swimming pool? I don't know why they ask, there isn't a swimming pool.

“Do not stay. If you have a choice”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2011

Bad hotel. Everything is bad in it. Dirty personnel, elevator out of order 3 days per week. Rooms are very dirty, I have pictures: from the courtains to the bathroom. I had to ask twice to give me a soap. 130€/night for 6 days in a room with shower only !
It's not that I stayed one night only. That's why I'm telling you: stay away from it if you have a choice.

“Decent city centre hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2011

The President is a clean, comfortable and safe hotel slap in the centre of Gaborone. Rooms are recently refurbished and of a high standard, with good beds, bathrooms and a range of cable chanels. I found almost all the staff to be friendly and helpful. Meals (all buffet style) while a little pricey were of high standard and generous. Rather stodgy and meat dominated but this is typical for Botswana. Located on Main Mall which is useful for supermarkets, a bottle store and a basic range of shops.

Tip: if you have any spare time in Gabs make a half day trip to Mokolodi Nature reserve 20mins from the hotel (take a cab...about 120 Pula each way). You can do good, reasonably priced game drives and even have close contact with 2 semi-tame orphaned cheetahs. Bar and restaurant there is also good. A nice trip out the city.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking main mall for views of the african market below.

“Price Inconsistence”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2011

The Hotel Accomodation is generally fair and its proximity to central shopping malls does make life easy. The staff are also friendly. However do not trust the price they tell you at check in. We did check in at 648 Pula per night for 6 nights however on check out we were told that the rate was increased two nights into our stay. The hotel insisted that we pay a new rate of pula 1080 per night for four of the six days!! lest we would be dealt with. Of course we paid but left very dejected.

“5 minutes to hell!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2010
4
people found this review helpful

I should have known to worry when, despite reconfirming in the morning, the shuttle didn't turn up to collect me at the airport that there were interesting times ahead.

After waiting 45 minutes (the hotel had assured me it would be 5 more minutes a number of times) I finally caught a taxi to the hotel and tried to check in at 13:45. "Check in is at 2pm" I was told - "no exceptions". I figured it was 15 min so what the hell. At 2:40 I finally got a room on the 5th (top) floor.

First thing in the room I switch on the aircon - 35 degree heat was very hot. No cold air of course! I rang reception and was told someone would come in 5 minutes. Half an hour later called and same story. Third time a team of people arrive and work on the aircon. Lots of laughter amongst the team follows before they rip the aircon unit from the wall and leave with it leaving a big hole in the wall. 20 min later back with anew aircon.

Paradise - it works brilliantly for two minutes. They leave and within a minute the unit starts to make an almighty shuddering sound. Another 5 calls and two hours later (and at least 4 promises of 5 minutes) and I decide to go down to confront them.

I wait for the (only) lift - and wait! Finally give up and walk to find a cleaning lady on the 3rd floor with a bucket holding the lift door open!

At reception more promises of 5 minutes... Decide to go for a drink but find bar and lounge closed due to a strike...

This all proceeds much the same for 2 days until I am due to leave. I book a shuttle and they say it will go 5:45 am. So I come down at 5:35 to check out to be told the shuttle left 5 minutes ago. Checks the book, tuts his tongue and says "don't worry - it will be back in half an hour". Given the experience of 5 minutes, half an hour puts the fear of god in me. They make all sorts of promises for the next half hour (during which time they had still not finalized my check out) before I eventually manage to flag down a passing taxi.

Disaster from start to finish - and if I ever hear "5 minutes" again I will need trauma counselling!
