I have stayed at the Alvalade many times, often for 4 to 5 weeks at a time. The rooms are comfortable, and have the amenities which are on a par with similar hotels in Europe.
Air conditioning was effective, TV was adequate, free WiFi is provided but quality of connection was dependant on how far your room was from the router and the time of day. It was often easier to take my laptop to the bar or lounge areas.
Buffet style breakfast, lunch and dinner was available, as was an a la carte menu. Food choice and quality was adequate for an hotel in an expensive third world country recovering from decades of civil war.
Leisure facilities were very basic. Local beers were of average price but imported alcoholic drinks were expensive. Laundry service was efficient.
Hotel security, on a whole was good, however, I witnessed 2 occasions when colleagues were victims of burglary and on another occasion a colleague was robbed at gunpoint in the street 50 metres from the hotel entrance.
Staff response to complaints or when resolving problems was often slow or inefficient.
If required to visit Luanda again, I would not hesitate to stay at the Alvalade again. After all Luanda is a third world capital city, in a country which is rapidly developing following the end of a 27 year internal war.
