“If you're a backpacker, this is the best place to stay in Victoria Falls”

I would recommend this place to everyone. What a fabulous experience we had here. The place is located at a very short walk from the town centre. Its got one of the best restaurants of the town within its premises called 'The Blue Baboon'. The place has a very community feeling as most of the backpackers prefer to stay here and a lot of people can be seen lazing around the garden/pool all day long. On entering this place, you'll be welcomed by two huge St. Bernard's who keep roaming around the premises. They might look scary but are the gentlest dogs i've seen. As night falls, the entire young crowd of the town descends to the bar in this lodge making it a virtual party hub. Its got a very helpful tours desk which books the best value trips for you.

“Excellent atmosphere if you don't mind roughing it a little.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2010

Shoestrings is one of the few active night spots in Vic Falls with regular evening entertainment and a nightly happy hour. However the rooms are dirty and you're unlikely to want to cook in their kitchen so it's the social side you're staying here for.

“Shoestrings Lodge - nice, clean and budget!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

The Shoestrings Lodge is just few minutes walk from the center of Victoria falls. It has many types of accommodation from tents to dorms and private rooms... there is a nice bar and restaurant that serve some types of food... the food is very simple... eggs, burgers etc...
You can book in the bar tours and activities such as lion walk, bunjy jump, elephant ride and many others. There are hot showers and laundry service. The lodge has a nice pool and there is a small spa where the ladies can get their nails done, massages are also available. Internet service is also available.

In short, it's a great place to stay. but you should remember it's more like a backpacker place so if you are looking for luxury then this is not the place for you.

“Typical backpackers... but don't stay in our room!”

Situated just about in the middle of town... Easy walking distance to shops.. Staff were nice and helpful... We only stayed one night, but that was enough. We had an ensuite room. But the shower was concrete, dribbling spout & cold. An outdoor hose would have been better.. Granted the place is cheap to stay at.. But this was below the level of the rest of the buildings. The locals are really struggling and it was good to stay there and help them out.. buy some local things! Good Security.. Felt surprisingly safe in Vic Falls. Walked the streets and talked to some locals..Take alot of US one dollar bills as that is their currency now. We weren't there for nightlife but it seemed like the place to stay for that.
I'd consider somewhere else if the transport was cheap.

“Hmmm...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2010

Booked Shoestrings after reading positive reviews, and we are travellers used to budget accommodation, however, we were not impressed with Shoestrings. Whilst the lodge is lively, with evening entertainment and cheap alcohol, which was great, the rooms left much to be desired. The bathroom was the main problem, as there was no glass in the windows, just trellis, and the shower drained through an open hole to the outdoors, meaning ants infested the room. Fortunately, we had bug spray with us, so regularly sprayed the floors, and stuffed the drainage hole with sprayed tissue. Along with the wide gap under the front door (into the bedroom, we worried about mosquitoes coming in, and no nets were provided for the beds. Whilst the linen didn't look dirty, I chose to sleep in my sleeping bag as I was apprehensive about the cleanliness of the accommodation. As we arrived from the UK, we assumed that perhaps all African accommodation was as basic, however, having explored for a month (though not elsewhere in Zim), we believe otherwise. Victoria Falls town felt safe, and was close to the falls, so no worries about staying on the Zimbabwean side.
