Arrive on the Rovos train and step straight into this old colonial hotel. It is like going back in time. A really fabulous building with helpful staff. Quite acceptable food in three restaurants. Though unless you have a tie, shirt, jacket and shoes they chuck you out of the main restaurant which is why it is always empty. Smart casual is not known here. Forget a star rating as it does not really apply to this hotel. The rooms vary considerably, from good to a bit scruffy with quiet to noisy air-con. All of them are in the style of a bygone era but with air-con. Your neighbours shower, toilet flush and water use will vary from a symphony to annoyance. To offset this you must indulge in the past and think this is how it was grand rooms, old paintings, a fabulous view of the water vapour riding form the falls while drinking a G&T on the terrace. The mosquitoes in the evening are not put off by the Tonic, so use some insect repellent. Transit to the airport is15 USD per person and is about 15/20 mins. drive. There is very little to see in the town but there are plenty of tourist shops to browse. Walking to the falls or town is fine and a few hawkers will try to offer their wares but give no hassle, if you just ignore them. There are many "Tourist Police" and private security guys who will walk with you and are happy with a dollar or two at the end if you offer it, but won't ask or intimidate you for it and will shoo away everyone. The entrance to the falls is thirty USD per person, which I think is quite expensive. There are hawkers who will hire plastic rain coats and umbrellas for a few dollars. An umbrella is absolutely worth taking or hiring. It is a bit hot for the plastic coats. Overall it is an interesting hotel with free wifi in rooms and certainly worth two or three nights stay.
