“Disappointed!!!”

Having taken my family for the first time to africa, we had booked at the Hwange Safari Lodge for 2 nights and to our disappointment the hotel was run down. There is a lack of staff education and competency some of them tried their best. The only best thing that is there is the view to the waterhole .The rooms are dirty , old furniture and the bathroom's all need to be re-done.

“Needs a good renovation....”

I stayed with friends here for 2 nights recently, and whilst the location is fantastic, the water hole is great, the staff are generally very friendly, the rooms itself are not great. They were not clean, as in not hoovered everyday, as bugs were on the floor, and were still there 2 days later. The bathroom was also not cleaned very well either. The patio door outside did not lock, the air conditioning did not work, when other people's did, friends in a different room had no hot water the whole time, and the rooms are in a good need of a make over.

The food is not great either, most of it was cold, or not how it should have been, for example, scrambled eggs in the morning, are pre-done, and watery, we had soup that had not a bit of flavour in it at all, and the plates were not clean that the food was served up on.

having said that, this was not the most awful hotel I have ever stayed in, it has a lot going for it in respect of location, and has a pool for the kids if you have any. They were also very helpful when a member of our group lost of phone, and kept it for a few days for us. The staff is very helpful, and will do their best to make you feel welcome, and if you are looking for somewhere comfortable to stay in a great location, then this place would be ideal. If you are looking for somewhere luxurious, then not the place to go.

Room Tip: All rooms look out over the waterhole, so any room is good, but if you have an upstairs room, keep w...

“Cape to Cairo”

I must have been a great place but today it is run done and could do with a coat of TLC. The staff tried tried very hard with their limited resources and all in all not a bad stop over on the way to the Kariba Ferry.

“Loved it and will go back”

We spent 2 nights there and loved our stayed. The rooms were very nice and really clean, the beds were so comfortable, best nights sleep I had in a while. The staff were friendly and helpful, you must remember that things move slowly in Africa so don't expect the speed of Europe. The phones worked and they were quick to put through my requested call to Bulawayo. The food was good and we really enjoyed the breakfast, they had everything that we requested.
We even watched a cheetah eating kudu right under one the watering hole lights.
The hair dryers are dodgy ! but as the hotel is suffering from the economics and lack of tourists I'm not too bitter about this !! Planning to stay there again on our next trip to Zimbabwe.

Room Tip: The left wing is being renovated but has the best views of the watering hole, you can have a room on...

“Worst night stay in a hotel ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2010

Firstly, let me say that the location is wonderful and the staff were great - they did all they could and we felt sorry for them having to work in a hotel that no one (owners, managment etc) seemed to care about.

We were booked in for two nights and we realised, within the hour, that this was not going to be pleasant. There were, maybe, 10 others staying in this large hotel at the time we were there.
Our rooms were interleading - only one had an aircon that worked and only one had a door that could open onto the varandah. No phones were in the room, so when we asked for rooms with working doors and aircons, we had to walk a while to reception to be told "only a few rooms have working aircons" (Must be very few, with only 5 other couples in house).

We ordered drinks outside - paid $21 for 4 drinks and noticed an additional tax of $3!! on that, so it came to $24 - is that legal in Zim because nowhere else we stayed had this additional tax? Drinks were also limited (no red wine!), expensive and pretty poor quality.

At night after dinner, about 50 Elephants came to the watering hole, it would have been amazing had the quality of the lights been better, we could only see the ones very close to the fence with only dark images moving below by the watering hole..

The lights in the entire hotel went off at about 12 pm and only came back on at about 6 am. It was pitch black and about 35 degree's in our room, so as you can imagine, none of us got a good nights sleep and we woke up with very little of our humour remaining. Did we get an explanation or an apology........ah no!

We did however go to breakfast, as this was included, though no one else knew this and we had to go to reception to have this cleared. There was no way we were going to pay $20 EACH for a very limited and dull breakfast, that included coffee with plastic spoons.

One night was all we could handle and never again, that's for sure.

A drastic change is needed in this hotel, which one can see, was once brilliant for familiies.
