“ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

Arrived here intending to stay only one day while waiting for room to open up at the preferred hotel. But, the Holiday Inn turned out to be ok enough, so I extended. Walk in rate was 150 usd cash. Using HI website, spoke live with person in US office and reserved more days for only 100 usd. At checkout, was told that card was not charged and had to pay cash. A bit of confusion, so best to confirm with Guest Relations staff, who are excellent, as good as you'll find at any hotel anywhere. Hotel itself as previously noted is dated, tired, stale, and minimally maintained. In room in front of building, the street noise isn't too bad. The cramped Holiday Inn lobby is a bustling place, action in the small bar. Adjacent to it, the chain restaurant is alright, saving you from having to forage at night in this miserable city. Breakfast included. Internet, too, just have to get vouchers at the desk -- ask for several.

“Ok but urgently needs a refurbishment”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

I have known and visited the Holiday Inn Harare since it was first opened. It does not seem as if there has been much refurbishment of the rooms in over 25 years. So there is an urgent need for money to be spent on it. It has rather a "tired" feel to it. There was no smoke alarm in theroom I stayed in (Room 517) and the bathroom light was so dark you could hardly see. Only a hole where the fridge was meant to be, no safe desposit in the room. Many of the lights in the lifts don't work. The frontdesk printer needs a new ribbonas you can hardly read the bill - and dozens of other small things.

My concern is that the management clearly know about this. My question is when they are going to fix these things and return the hotel to the standard of when it was built and one would expect.

That said, the staff are delightful and the food (though basic) was ok - the fresh fruit was hardly fresh and it remains far more difficult for vegetarians to feel welcome than is normal in most international-class hotels.

Yes I would recommend the hotel, even with all these drawbacks, though would hope that even after the needed refurbishment, the price would not increase unduly as it is a little too expensive for what you get on an international comparison basis.

Good for work as there is a good desk in theroom and the internet (mostly) worked, though you need to know they change the password each day (at different times), which I wasn;t told when I checked in.

“Usual big chain hotel quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

Holiday inn Hararre wasn't our initial choice because of the higher price tag. However, the entire Harrare was quite experience or you get really bad accommodations. The hotel is just like most other big chain 3 stars hotels. The rooms are a bit dated but fairly clean. Staffs in the hotel were very helpful. I had an accident occured and the managers were very nice to have send some fruits and snacks and visited me in the room. The location of the hotel is good. Many restaurants around and ok to walk to get food. Overall a good hotel.

“More or less OK except for breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2011

At 150 US$ per night without breakfast the Holiday Inn in Harare is expensive but as stated in my previous reviews, Africa is an expensive continent for travellers. The hotel is in need of a modernisation drive, the in wall mounted air-condition units are from yesteryear, the bath rooms are small even though I had a room on the so-called business floor. The room itself was spacious, the bed comfortable, no tissues in the tissue box, the floor of the room is carpeted and appears worn out. The breakfast for an extra 22 US$ was mediocre, the usual basic fare, eggs, rice which was too dry, sausages, vegetables, fruits, etc., nothing special, cornflakes but no cereals. Very friendly staff but making surveys during breakfast is a bad idea, I felt disturbed. The swimming pool can't be used because a net is spanned over it to protect children from falling into the pool, that is it what I was told. On the bright side: Free fast internet, codes only available from the guest relation office. Internet access in the business center costs 2 US$ per 30minutes.
