“The Highlight of Our Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2011

We were 5 adults, occupying 3 lodges for 2 nights, travelling in early December 2011. It's about an hour's drive from Lobo airstrip. The lodges were comfortable and the view from the lodges was great. Very nice to sit outside the room in the morning and drink coffee (at our other lodges, it was either a bit too cold or else they didn't have a great view).

What really set Klein's Camp apart from the other lodges we used, was the fact that they have their own large, private concession, which means: few other tourists, night dives, and the ability to go off-road. Another unique feature is that they use trackers there, who sit out on the hood of the rover looking for game (ours was "Mo", a Masai from the local tribe). They seemed willing to cater to our schedule, but we opted for the normal routine which as a game drive in the morning, lunch at camp, and then an evening game dive. I think it's best to depart early for the morning drive (around 6 AM), as there seem to be more animals about at dawn, and then have a long, lazy lunch. But do not miss the night drives! The night drive starts about 4:30 PM and lasts until about 8 - 8:30 PM, and it got dark around 6:30 PM. Our first night drive was good and we got to see a different side to the Serengeti, but it wasn't amazing.

Our second night drive turned out to be an experience of a lifetime. We saw nearly a hundred elephants early in the drive, and caught a brief glimpse of a cheetah after dark. Then, one of the other rovers called in a lion sighting. We hustled over and saw 4 lionesses roving the night plains. We had seen lions a few times earlier in the trip, but never this close. We followed them as they slowly crept closer to a herd of hartebeests. Eventually, one of the hartebeests wandered between two of the stalking lions, and the lions pounced. And there we sat, in an open vehicle, 20 feet away, as 4 ravenous lions devoured the hartebeest. We made it back to the lodge for dinner about 9:45 PM.

My only regret is that we didn't spend more time at this lodge, although, we were quite lucky - to see a successful lion hunt from start to finish is very rare.

“Kleins Camp a great private reserve safari”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

We spent three nights at Kleins camp this month. While this is an older lodge, everything is in great shape, and the service, staff and food is what one would expect from an &beyond property.
Rooms are actually private cottages with large bathroom facilities. All have sweeping views of the valleys below as well as the Kuka hills, in the Northeastern corner of the Serengeti.
Because this is a private concession, safari vehicles are able to go off road to view wildlife. We had fabulous encounters with an eight male lion coalition. They walked right by our vehicle. Loads of buffalo, giraffe, baboons, ostrich, hartebeest, wildebeests in migration route, topi, antelope, and beautiful, colorful birds.
Also, the Grumeti River goes through the property, so some hippo are present as well. Truly a first class safari experience.

“Great game viewing - would visit again !”

We stayed at Klein’s Camp for three nights and enjoyed it very much. We’ve been to quite a few game lodges in recent years but if it comes to game viewing this is surely one of the very best! We got very close to a lion pride of 17, saw a huge herd of buffalos, many giraffes, wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and much more. Even a part of the great migration came right past the camp.
On our full-day trip up to the Mara River we got lucky and not only saw the great migration and plenty of hippos and crocs but found one of the very few black rhinos living in the Serengeti. Everybody in our open Land Cruiser got very excited about that. The chances of finding leopard are said to be very high at Klein’s but we actually managed to miss it this time. Even on the way out to Lobo airstrip we saw lion and 3 cheetahs with a kill.
The views from the stone cottage and from the bar are awesome. The level of service and the food was excellent. We even enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing in-room massage by two lovely ladies.
Matt and his team were very motivated and taking really good care of all the guests.

The three things we liked most about Klein's :
- the number of game.
- the full-day trip to Mara river (even if it was raining on the way back and we got stuck in a stream)
- Selou(?) our ranger and Jackson our tracker.

Do not forget to bring a warm fleece since elevation is 1800 meters. This means also that there are hardly any insects and no Malaria but lower down in the plains Tsetse flies can be annoying. Definitely a recommendation to everyone wanting to see many different species.

“excellent camp and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

Excellent camp, with beautifull views and quite area just at the edge of the Serengeti.
Very homely, private feeling- superb game drives in the Serengeti. Food is reasonable given remote circumstances. This used to be a former hunters lodge, every room being a stone build cottage - very nice! An advantage is the private concession so night drives are possible. Opt for a cultural safari to the neighboring Maasai village for a fascinating cultural experience.

“Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

We've been to Klein's on four occasions and find it to be one of the best safari camps in the Serengeti.

First of all, this camp sits on a private reserve so you have the wildlife to yourself, without a crowd of vehicles trying to get ever closer to a wildlife sighting. The vehicles are open so everyone enjoys a great view and they can go off road to get closer to wildlife. AND... the vehicles can go into the Seregeti National Reserve if that's where the action is.

Secondly, the camp, perched high on a hillside offers magnificent views over the reserve. We have watched elephant, buffalo, giraffe and more just sitting on the deck of our cottages.

Next, the camp itself is superb. Great spacious cottages, a magnificent bar overlooking the valley, swimming pool and more. This camp has always been well managed and this trip was no different.

There's an interesting bonus: Interesting Maasai villages are situated about 45 minutes from the camp. Unlike villages that receive several visits each day, these villages are visted just occasinally but guests at Kleins so there is always a warm connection with the Maasai.

My only concern is that the road up to the camp is rough and rocky -- it's a road you have to travel on each game drive. Fortunately the reception when you arrive is warm and genuine.

We'll be back

Room Tip: All the rooms are superb; the only significant difference is the distance from the main lodge.
